Cheltenham Festival 2026: Ireland Lead Tightest Prestbury Cup Battle In Years

Three days down and one to go at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, and the race for the Prestbury Cup remains tantalisingly tight.
Ireland hold a narrow 11-10 lead over Great Britain heading into Gold Cup Day - the closest the competition has been at this stage in years - with everything still to play for across Friday's seven races.
It has been a week of dramatic twists and turns.
Britain edged Day One 4-3, Ireland dominated Day Two 5-2, and on St Patrick's Thursday it was once more 4-3 in Britain's favour.

However, that wasn't enough to overturn Ireland's overall lead.
So can the British win the Prestbury Cup for the first time since 2018?
They'll need to beat Ireland in at least four races across Gold Cup Day to make sure.
With the Gold Cup itself, the Triumph Hurdle, the Albert Bartlett and the County Hurdle all on the card, there is plenty of ammunition left for both sides.
What Is The Prestbury Cup?
Named after the village closest to Cheltenham Racecourse, the Prestbury Cup is an annual head-to-head competition between British and Irish-trained horses across all four days of the Festival.
One point is awarded for each race won, with the nation that trains the most winners taking the trophy.
What started as something of a light-hearted subplot has evolved into a genuine contest - not to mention a popular Festival market with the best betting sites.
A Roller Coaster Thursday
St Patrick's Thursday was a day of constant momentum shifts.
Britain's opening two winners - 40/1 shock White Noise in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle and Meetmebythesea in the Jack Richards - briefly levelled the overall score at 8-8, offering genuine hope for the home side.
Ireland then struck back with a Grade 1 treble. Wodhooh held on in the Mares' Hurdle for Gordon Elliott, before 33/1 shot Home By The Lee finally landed the Stayers' Hurdle at the fifth attempt for Joseph O'Brien.
Henry de Bromhead completed the Irish response when Heart Wood won the Ryanair Chase after the late withdrawal of odds-on favourite Fact To File.
Britain finished the day strongly, with Dan Skelton's Supremely West landing the Pertemps and amateur Shane Cotter winning the Kim Muir on Ask Brewster.
2026 Prestbury Cup Odds
Ireland remain odds-on favourites to make it seven wins in a row - and 12 consecutive Festivals unbeaten - despite the closeness of the battle.
The Irish were 1/7 before the Festival got under way and are now 1/6.
Despite their success, Great Britain's odds have gone from 9/2 prior to the Festival, to 14/1 to win the Prestbury Cup heading into the final day.
Meanwhile, if you think there will be a repeat of the 2019 tie between the two, that is available at 6/1, down from 14/1.
Winner | Odds | Probability |
Ireland | 1/6 | 85.7% |
Great Britain | 14/1 | 6.7% |
Tie | 6/1 | 14.3% |
Ireland's Gold Cup Day Hopes
Ireland go into Friday holding a one-win advantage and their ammunition is considerable.
Willie Mullins saddles Gaelic Warrior in the Gold Cup and the eight-year-old carries strong claims under Paul Townend.
He also dominates the Triumph Hurdle with nine of the 20 runners, including joint-favourites Proactif and Selma De Vary.
Having won that race in five of the last six years, further Prestbury Cup points from the juvenile contest look likely.
Gavin Cromwell saddles defending Gold Cup champion Inothewayurthinkin, while Firefox is another Irish runner in the feature.
Ireland need only match Britain across the seven remaining races, and with the Triumph Hurdle looking like a banker, Mullins and company will feel the trophy is theirs to lose.
Britain's Shot at History
For the first time in years there is genuine reason for British optimism.
Their top trainers have shown up all week in numbers and have all contributed winners, with some strong British runners still to come on Gold Cup Day.
Dan Skelton still has Grey Dawning in the mix, while Nicky Henderson's Jango Baie is a leading Gold Cup contender.
Ben Pauling's The Jukebox Man is also in the Gold Cup picture, which could prove decisive in the Prestbury Cup if the home nation can land that particular prize.
Ireland retain major firepower, but this is undoubtedly the closest the race has been at this stage in many years.
