Oxford Vs Luton, Tuesday, 7.45pm

A full calendar of midweek Championship action signals the opportunity to make it three wins in quick succession for this column.

We start at Oxford for leg one of this latest double for a head-to-head which could also be billed as the battle of the new bosses.

Presiding over League One promotion-chasers Wycombe until a few days ago, it must have taken a bit of convincing for Luton to prise boss Matt Bloomfield away from his previous role, but following the exit of Rob Edwards that's exactly what they have done.

Bloomfield had really made a name for himself in Buckinghamshire, guiding the Chairboys to second place in the third tier, but he has now traded that in for a testing Championship relegation scrap with the Hatters.

In his opening game in the Luton dugout he watched his new charges grind their way to a goalless draw at home to Preston at the weekend.

That result arrested an awful sequence of five consecutive defeats, but saw them drop to 23rd in the table following victories for fellow basement battlers Cardiff, Hull and Portsmouth.

That's a precarious spot for a team which 12 months ago were living the dream in the Premier League, even thumping Brighton 4-0 at home around this time last year!

What next for Bloomfield? A 67-mile journey to Oxford is what, for a clash which pits a mid-table team and rapidly improving against one in deep trouble.

Things move lightning fast in football, just ask former Oxford boss Des Buckingham.

Not just an employee, but also a lifelong match-going fan, Buckingham was shown the door in December following 13 months in the hotseat, despite guiding his team up from League One via a famous play-off victory back in May.

In his place has come the ultra experienced and deeply knowledgeable Gary Rowett, and to say he's hit the ground running would be something of an understatement.

Undefeated in six in the league since Rowett and trusted assistant Mark Sale entered the fray, the U's have been enjoying themselves, amassing 14 points from a possible 18 to propel themselves up to 15th in the table.

Victories under Rowett have come against some decent opposition too, especially the 1-0 smash-and-grab at his former employers Millwall, as well as Saturday's 1-0 home success over fifth-placed Blackburn.

Notably, Oxford have won all three on their own turf in the Rowett era, and next up come Luton for what is a clash between two bosses with strong reputations, both tasked with a survival mission.

Luton may well now experience the new manager bounce under Bloomfield, but we know for certain Rowett is going great guns, and with that in mind the home side look cracking value at nearly 2/1 to bag another three points as part of their own managerial honeymoon.

Oxford look unmissable value at 19/10 with William Hill.

Leeds Vs Norwich, Wednesday, 7.45pm

Looking ahead to leg two, generally I'm loath to tip any side at odds shorter than 4/7, always trying to ensure these doubles wipe their face with combined odds of at least 2/1.

That said, everything has its price, and with Oxford inflating the possible gains at generous odds, I'll wait until Wednesday night for leg two, and a rare sighting for this space of one at shorter odds.

Regular readers will know as recently as Saturday that I highlighted the costly absence for Norwich of 16-goal striker Borja Sainz, the dangerous Spaniard currently about to serve the third game of a six-match suspension for a spitting offence.

They duly lost to nil at the weekend, and minus their main source of goals it's hard to be much more optimistic for them on Wednesday evening as they take on table-topping Leeds at Elland Road.

These two sides drew 1-1 at Carrow Road in October, but what's also memorable is the Canaries collapsed to a 4-0 play-off semi final defeat in Yorkshire last May.

Norwich would love to pocket another draw this time, but the odds look stacked against them without Sainz.

Away from home and with Leeds needing to win to fend off the chasing pack as they eye a Premier League return, it's hard to think that a side which has taken just 13 points from a possible 42 on their travels this season will have enough to tame the hosts.

With an overall goals for tally of 51, Leeds are comfortably the highest scorers in the Championship.
