Key Football Betting Markets Explained
If you're new to sports betting, it can be daunting to see the incredible number of markets available for one sporting event, whether that be a football match, a golf tournament or an NFL game.
This article explains some of the markets available on betting sites ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.
It's always important to carefully read how bets are worded as sometimes they can be misleading.
Both Teams To Score
Both teams to score is a simple yes/no market - does each side find the net at least once? It sidesteps the result entirely - a 3-1 and a 1-1 both pay out on "Yes" - making it popular for matches where goals look likely at both ends, even if the outcome is unpredictable.
Over 2.5 Total Goals
Over 2.5 total goals is betting on whether the combined goals in a match exceed 2.5 (i.e., 3 or more). It's the most widely used goals-total line, prized for stripping away the need to predict who scores or wins, just how many goals happen overall.
Double Chance
Covers two of the three possible results in one bet - home win or draw, away win or draw, or either team winning. It sacrifices some odds value for a built-in safety net, popular when backing a favourite, but wanting insurance against a draw.
Handicap Betting
Traditional handicaps give one side a virtual head start or deficit to level the playing field, useful when a match looks one-sided. Asian Handicap refines this further using quarter and half-goal lines (e.g., -0.25, -0.75) specifically to eliminate the draw as a possible outcome, so your stake is always resolved as a win, loss or partial refund rather than a push.
Draw No Bet
If the match ends level, your stake is simply returned - you're only betting on an outright win for your selected team. It's essentially a handicap bet with the line set at exactly zero, offering shorter odds than a straight win market in exchange for removing the draw risk.
Win Either Half
This is a bet that pays out if your selected team wins either the first half or the second half outright (not the overall match). A team could lose the game 2-1 but still win this bet if they won one of the two halves 1-0.
2-Up
2-Up is a promotional in-play offer (not a traditional market) where if your pre-match favourite goes 2 goals clear at any time during the game, the bookmaker pays out your bet as a winner immediately - regardless of the eventual final score.
Foul Involvement
A player-specific market betting on how many fouls a named player commits and/or draws during a match, often set as an over/under line. It's grown alongside the rise of statistical, player-prop betting beyond goals and cards.
Live In-Play Markets
Rather than locking in a bet before kickoff, in-play markets let you bet throughout the match as odds shift in real time with the score, momentum, and match events - covering everything from next goalscorer to time of the next corner, refreshed continuously as the game unfolds.
