The Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualification hopes hang in the balance, and they now face two difficult tests.

Just a month after Heimir Hallgrimsson's side were embarrassed by Armenia, they will again face the 105th-ranked team in the world.

Prior to that, the boys in green will travel to Portugal to take on the group leaders, the toughest test so far for the beleaguered Hallgrimsson.

The Icelandic manager has endured a miserable start to his time in charge of Ireland, and according to betting sites, a change of manager may now be on the cards.

Chris Hughton had been the early favourite for the job, but he has been replaced at the head of the market by Irish legend Damien Duff.

Here, Gambling.com takes a look at the names in the running and the latest next Republic of Ireland manager odds.

Duff Ready To Step Up

Former Ireland international Duff is now the 7/2 favourite to take over from Hallgrimsson if he gets his marching orders.

Although he has yet to test himself at the highest level, the former Chelsea winger impressed during his spell in charge of Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.

He led the club to their first LOI Premier Division title since 2006 and was praised for his honesty and outspokenness with the media.

Duff made 100 appearances for Ireland during his playing career and would be a breath of fresh air for Irish fans.

Hughton Linked Again

It is not the first time that former Newcastle, Norwich and Brighton manager Hughton has been linked with the Ireland job.

Last seen in charge of the Ghana national team, Hughton played over 50 times for Ireland and is still fondly remembered by fans.

Although his time in charge of Ghana didn't go as planned, he has the experience to turn things around for the Boys in Green.

Hughton is 4/1 with betting apps to get the job if Hallgrimsson is sacked.

O’Shea Could Get Top Job

Current assistant manager John O'Shea could be in line to get promoted to the top job.

O'Shea was interim manager earlier this year and was thought to be in the running for the job before Hallgrimsson was appointed.

The former Manchester United player brought some stability to the team during that time, and would have been a popular appointment despite his lack of experience.

O'Shea may now be ready to take the reins full-time, and he is 5/1 to be promoted to the head role.

Robbie Ready For Ireland Return?

Robbie Keane has surprised many with his managerial exploits in Israel and Hungary.

The Irish goalscoring legend led Maccabi Tel Aviv to an Israeli Premier League title in 2023/24, before leading Ferencvaros to a league win in Hungary last season.

Keane is Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer and is fondly remembered by fans.

It would be surprising to see him move into international management at this stage, however, and he is currently 15/2 in the betting.

Others In The Running

Stephen Bradley (6/1) has made a name for himself in the League of Ireland with Shamrock Rovers and has long been touted as a future Ireland manager.

Lee Carsley (9/1) is another manager who has been linked with the Irish post for some time, but he is happy in his current role in charge of the England U21s.

Ex-Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane and former Sweden boss Janne Andersson are both priced at 11/1.

Danny Rohl is 14/1 in the market, but the German is well sought after and is more likely to stay in club football.
