Premier League stats are a key tool for football punters seeking to beat the bookmakers with informed bets.

There is an almost overwhelming amount of Premier League data available online, so to help you cut through the noise we've analysed 10 essential Premier League stats here.

Statistics have been updated covering the 2023/24 season so far.

1. Most Common Premier League Final Score: 2-1

Premier League matches ended 2-1 to the home team on 19 occasions in the first five months of the season, making 2-1 the most common Premier League result

9% of games have finished 1-1, 7% finished 1-2 and 7% of matches ended with a 3-1 scoreline.

In the 2022/23 season, 1-0 was the most common scoreline, while 1-1 was the most likely final score in the three previous seasons.

Final Score Stats Over Last 5 Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 2-1 - 10%
  • 2022/23: 1-0 - 12%
  • 2021/22: 1-1 - 11%
  • 2020/21: 1-1 - 11%
  • 2019/20: 1-1 - 13%

2. Most Common Premier League Half-Time Score: 0-0

The most common half-time score in the Premier League is 0-0 (29% of matches so far this season).

You'll find games tend to be goalless at half-time in each Premier League campaign when looking back through historical statistics. In 2022/23, foe example, 98 matches (26%) were 0-0 at half-time.

1-0 is the second-most-common half-time score so far this campaign (21% of matches).

All of the best football betting sites have half-time score markets, so it can pay to to know what's most likely to happen in the first 45 minutes.

Half-Time Score Stats Over Last 5 Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 0-0 - 29%
  • 2022/23: 0-0 - 26%
  • 2021/22: 0-0 - 29%
  • 2020/21: 0-0 - 28%
  • 2019/20: 0-0 - 27%

3. Impact of Home Advantage: 48% Win Rate

Statistics show that home support plays a huge role in the outcome of results in the Premier League. So far this season, the home side has won in 48% of matches.

The power of the home crowd becomes clear when we look at the stats from the 2020/21 campaign, which was played almost entirely in empty stadiums due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

That season offered the fewest home wins since the Premier League began in 1992, with just 144 (38%) home victories recorded.

Villa Park has been the toughest place to go in the Premier League this season, with Aston Villa picking up 28 points from a possible 30 in their first 10 home games.

The Etihad Stadium was the league's main fortress in the five previous seasons, with City winning 78 home games en route to four titles from a possible five.

Home Win Percentage in Last 5 EPL Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 48%
  • 2022/23: 48%
  • 2021/22: 43%
  • 2020/21: 38%
  • 2019/20: 45%

4. Number of Cards Per Game: 4.91

Betting on yellow and red cards has become very popular with punters, especially now that bet builders are all the rage.

This season has seen a huge increase in the average number of cards in Premier League games

The combined average number of red and yellow cards so far this season is 4.91 per game. That's way up on last year's average of 3.69.

Chelsea and Sheffield United pick up the most yellow cards - an average of 3.05 per game each. Burnley, Liverpool and Spurs are the most likely teams to pick up red cards so far this season.

Interestingly, during the Covid-disrupted season of 2020/21, the card average dropped to 3.01.

Average Number of Cards Per Game in Last 5 Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 4.91
  • 2022/23: 3.69
  • 2021/22: 3.53
  • 2020/21: 3.01
  • 2019/20: 3.49

5. Goals Per Game Average: 3.11

The average number of goals has consistently gone up in recent years and has hit new heights this season - with 3.11 goals scored per game.

It has become common to see the 1,000-goal barrier broken during a Premier League season, with this milestone reached in each of the last eight campaigns.

The last time a Premier League season had less than 2.5 goals per game was 2008/09, which ended with an average of 2.48.

So far this season, over 2.5 goals have been scored in 63% of games. This is a useful statistic to bear in mind when backing the over/under market.

Goals Per Game Over Last 5 Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 3.11
  • 2022/23: 2.85
  • 2021/22: 2.82
  • 2020/21: 2.69
  • 2019/20: 2.72

6. Both Teams Score: 60% of Matches

If you're a fan of the BTTS betting market, you'll need up-to-date statistics to help you predict whether both teams will score in a Premier League match.

So far this season, both sides have hit the net in 60% of matches

This is a marked increase on last year's Premier League, where both sides found the net in 52% of games - and of course it tallies with the big rise in the number of goals scored.

As you'll see from the below stats, both teams to score is usually a 50/50 chance or thereabouts, but the goal glut of 2023/24 has had a big impact on this stat.

Both Teams Scoring Over Last 5 Seasons:

  • 2023/24: 60% of matches
  • 2022/23: 52% of matches
  • 2021/22: 50% of matches
  • 2020/21: 49% of matches
  • 2019/20: 51% of matches

7. Time Of Goal Trends: 26% Scored After 76th Minute

This season, by far the most goals (26%) have come after the 76th minute of Premier League matches on average. It's important to note, when breaking down goals into 15-minute intervals, that 76-90 mins includes added time at the end of a game.

17.5% of goals have been scored between the 61st and 75th minutes, while 16.6% are scored in the 15 minutes leading up to half-time.

The four seasons before this one all follow a similar trend, with late goals proving most common as teams grow tired and the game opens up.

However, there's been a significant increase in late drama this season, probably due to more additional time being played in the Premier League than in previous seasons.

Timing Of Most Premier League Goals Over Last 5 Seasons (15-Min Segments)

  • 2023/24: 76-90 mins - 26.3%
  • 2022/23: 76-90 mins - 20.0%
  • 2021/22: 76-90 mins - 22.4%
  • 2020/21: 76-90 mins - 21.2%
  • 2019/20: 76-90 mins - 21.6%

8. New Year’s Day League Leader Stats

Arsenal are the latest team to lose the title having been top of the Premier League on New Year’s Day.

Liverpool were the New Year's Day 2024 leaders and it remains to be seen if Jurgen Klopp's men can hold on to top spot and win the title.

It has become fairly common for New Year’s leaders to be caught by the end of the season, with that fate befalling Liverpool in the 2020/21 campaign. The Reds led going into 2021 but Pep Guardiola’s Man City won 15 straight games to close the gap and land their third league title in four seasons.

Teams that have been top of the table on the morning of January 1 have failed to win the title in 14 of 31 Premier League seasons.

Last 5 Teams To Blow A New Year's Day Advantage:

  • 2022/23: Arsenal
  • 2020/21: Liverpool
  • 2018/19: Liverpool
  • 2015/16: Arsenal
  • 2013/14: Arsenal
