DraftKings Sportsbook: Ontario's Most Interesting Sports Betting Trends in 2023

So 2023 is finally in the books, the first full year of open, competitive legalized sports betting in Ontario.
Ontario has fast evolved into one of North America’s largest betting jurisdictions. There are currently 27 licensed operators offering sports betting in the province, with more applications in the hopper, operators looking to jump into the market.
According to Q2 2023-24 market results, for the period ended Sept. 30, 2023, online casinos were still dominating the market. Betting on sports and esports as well as proposition and novelty bets accounted for $1.9 billion (13 per cent, down from $2 billion, and 14% in Q1) of total wagers and $118 million (22 per cent, down from $138 million, or 25 per cent) of gaming revenue.
DraftKings has given us an inside look at what’s most popular among those bettors.
According to 2023 sports betting trends released by the sportsbook, the most bet on sports teams overall in Ontario was the Toronto Blue Jays, followed by the L.A. Lakers of the NBA and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. The NBA’s Golden State Warriors and NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs rounded out the Top 5. That was a bit of a surprise since the NFL has typically dominated sports betting.
The NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, an organization that hasn’t won a league championship since 1967, and again last spring disappointed fans by losing in the second round of the NHL playoffs to the Florida Panthers, was still the most bet on team to win the Stanley Cup in 2023, followed by the Edmonton Oilers and the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights won it all last spring.
On the NFL front, it was the Joe Burrow-led Cincinnati Bengals that was the most bet on team to win the Super Bowl, followed by the Bills and San Francisco 49ers.
Most bet on team to win the World Series was the Jays, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. Most bet on team to win the NBA Finals was the Milwaukee Bucks, followed by the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.
