Euro 2024 Group D Predictions: The Panel's Best Bets And Tips

Euro 2024 Group D Best Bets

Two European heavyweights headline Group D at Euro 2024 with France strongly fancied by betting sites to come out on top.

The two-time European championship winners are no bigger than 4/7 to win what should be a competitive section, ahead of the Netherlands, who lost twice to Les Bleus in qualifying.

It would be wrong to write off the chances of a talented Dutch squad, though, particularly on German soil, the Oranje having won the Euros the last time Germany hosted the competition.

Austria and Poland complete the group and are hardly cannon fodder, the Austrians having enjoyed a tremendous build-up to the tournament.

Injuries to key players may ultimately undermine the other Group D contenders' attempts to topple France, and The Panel has factored that in when picking out their best Euro 2024 bets for each team.

Austria

Manager: Ralf Rangnick

Captain: Marko Arnautovic

Euro 2024 Outright Odds: 80/1 – Unibet

Austria were being touted as dark horses for Euro 2024 before losing two of their best players and first-choice goalkeeper to injury.

The absence of captain David Alaba, midfield lynchpin Xaver Schlager and Alexander Schlager has tempered expectations, although they will still have their each-way backers at 80/1 on football betting sites given how they’ve performed in the build-up.

They finished runners-up to Belgium in qualifying under Ralf Rangnick, who has completely changed the ethos of the Austrian national team in his two years in charge, transforming them into a high-energy, high-press outfit.

Under Rangnick, they’ve claimed the scalps of Germany and Italy, and won’t be backing down as underdogs when they face France and the Netherlands.

Having made the last 16 for the first time in their history at Euro 2020, this iteration of Austria looks good enough to match that feat, despite being placed in a tricky group

Even with the injuries, Austria’s midfield looks strong, skipper Marko Arnautovic provides an X-factor and Michael Gregoritsch has recently found his scoring touch at the international level.

It’s enough to convince The Panel to expect to see Austria in the last-16.

France

Manager: Didier Deschamps

Captain: Kylian Mbappe

Euro 2024 Outright Odds: 4/1 – Betfred

Didier Deschamps has led France to one World Cup and three finals in his five tournaments as head coach and anything other than another deep run at Euro 2024 will be viewed as a major disappointment.

Deschamps would have two World Cups on his coaching CV were it not for a penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the 2022 final. The worry for the rest of the Euros title hopefuls is that it’s likely to be a pretty similar team that went so close in Qatar taking to the field in Germany.

World Cup Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappe is the obvious superstar in the side and is well-placed to have a strong showing, but the team around him is of an extremely high standard too.

Antoine Griezmann is arguably as important as Mbappe to France in his new role in midfield, while they look solid without the ball, despite no longer having Raphael Varane marshalling the backline.

They were stunningly knocked out of the last Euros in the round of 16, but barring another slip up like that, it’s tough to imagine Les Bleus not being there towards the end of Euro 2024.

If that is the case, new betting sites may have underestimated how many goals they’ll bag. The line has been set at 10.5 and the over looks a strong play given the expectations of France.

They bagged 14 goals in total when winning the 2018 World Cup and 16 goals in 2022. As far as the Euros go, they scored 13 times when finishing runners up in 2016.

Having scored 14 goals in one game in qualifying, this attack has shown itself to be lethal when it clicks.

Netherlands

Manager: Ronald Koeman

Captain: Virgil van Dijk

Euro 2024 Outright Odds: 18/1 – BetVictor

Any thoughts of the Netherlands repeating their Euro 88 victory in Germany have been tempered by an underwhelming qualifying run, a poor Nations League Finals showing and an injury to star midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

De Jong will miss the tournament with an ankle injury, joining first-choice goalkeeper Justin Bijlow and Teun Koopmeiners on the sidelines.

Adding to boss Ronald Koeman’s worries are concerns over the form of forward Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay. But there’s plenty to like about the Dutch squad too, which arguably has the best collection of centre backs at Euro 2024.

The likes of Xavi Simons, Tijjani Reijnders, Donyell Malen, Brian Brobbey and Denzel Dumfries also head to the Euros fresh from good domestic seasons.

They’ve only twice been eliminated at the group stage at past Euros and should escape Group D with a team that, depending on the opponents, is good enough to win a knockout game.

The Netherlands’ issues have come against Europe’s stronger sides, twice losing to France in qualifying, while they’ve been beaten by Germany, Croatia and Italy in the last 12 months.

The Panel believe the quarter-finals are the natural exit point for this Dutch side and like them as a 7/2 chance to bow out at that point.

Poland

Manager: Michal Probierz

Captain: Robert Lewandowski

Euro 2024 Outright Odds: 200/1 – SpreadEx

Poland made a pig's ear of qualifying for the Euros, finishing third in their group behind Albania and Czech Republic, and were it not for their Nations League results, they wouldn’t have made the play-offs.

A soft play-off semi-final against Estonia was followed by a tense penalty shootout success over Wales in the final and while they’ve looked good in the build-up, it’s tough to get too excited about a team that’s only ever won two games across the last four Euros appearances.

Injuries are a concern with talisman Robert Lewandowski ruled out of their opening game against the Netherlands, while fellow strikers Arkadiusz Milik and Karol Swiderski are likely to sit out the tournament.

The Poles have proven to be awkward customers at times, but they are likely to be found wanting against teams of this calibre, as was the case when they were well beaten by France in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
