Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany is the odds-on favourite for the Burnley manager job with leading betting sites.

The post has been vacant ever since the Clarets made the shock decision to axe long-standing head coach Sean Dyche on 16th April.

Burnley suffered relegation on the final day of the season after they failed to better the result of Leeds United when losing 2-1 to Newcastle. The Clarets are now in search of the right man to guide them out of the Championship and back to Premier League football.

Caretaker boss Mike Jackson has enjoyed some success - he was named Premier League Manager of the Month for April - but the club remain on the hunt for a permanent appointment.

The odds have shifted considerably since mid-April, and these are the current frontrunners to land the job:

Vincent Kompany

Former Man City captain Kompany is an overwhelming favourite to replace Dyche as Burnley manager.

The highly decorated Belgian spent a year playing for Anderlecht in his homeland after leaving City, and they named him as their manager in 2020.

Kompany led them to a third-place finish last season, and they finished again in the Belgian Pro League.

He would be an intriguing choice for Burnley. Kompany always appeared knowledgeable when giving post-match interviews for Man City.

He has a winner’s mentality, and he knows the Premier League well.

Kompany showed his intelligence by gaining an MBA at Manchester Business School in 2018, having studied throughout his playing career.

His wife is Mancunian, and he could be interested in a return to the northwest at a current price of 1/3 on football betting sites.

Joey Barton

Barton was one of the most colourful and controversial players in the country during his time at Man City, Newcastle and QPR.

He represented Burnley towards the end of his career, making 38 appearances during the 2015-16 season. Barton returned to the club in 2017, following a brief sojourn at Rangers, and played his final games at Turf Moor before hanging up his boots.

He cut his teeth as a manager at League One side Fleetwood Town and his time at the club was peppered with equal amounts of brilliance and mayhem - highlighted perfectly when he was named Manager of the Month two days after being charged with assaulting a rival manager.

Barton moved to Bristol Rovers in February 2021, with the club dangling precariously above the relegation zone. Rovers were unable to beat the drop, but Barton led them to a third-place finish in League Two this season.

A 7-0 victory over Scunthorpe on the final day ensured they finished above Northampton Town on goal difference and secured automatic promotion.

He certainly has the personality to cope with the rigours of Championship management, and he has earned plaudits for his tactical acumen this season.

888 are offering 6/1 on him landing the Burnley job.

Chris Wilder

Chris Wilder

Wilder is one of the most qualified names on the list. He led Sheffield United from League One to the Premier League, where they finished ninth in 2020.

He took the reins at Middlesbrough at the start of the 2021-22 season, and he showed he still has what it takes to topple Premier League giants when Boro beat Man Utd and Spurs in the FA Cup.

However, they fell just short of securing a play-off place, and Wilder may be interested in a new challenge.

He is best priced at 8/1, but some UK bookmakers have him priced significantly shorter.

Wayne Rooney

Rooney has proven himself to be a shrewd tactician and a superb man manager during his brief tenure at Derby County.

The Rams were plunged into administration last summer, meaning they could not sign any players, so the former England captain was forced to make use of a threadbare squad in the Championship this season.

Derby were relegated from the Championship, but the Rams would comfortably have survived had they not been deducted 21 points for slipping into administration.

Rooney was initially priced at 4/1 to become the next permanent Burnley manager, but he has now drifted out to 8/1 with 888.

He rebuffed the Everton job earlier this year, and Derby are keen for him to stay, but the former England captain could be tempted by a move to Turf Moor.

Mike Jackson

Jackson was not exactly a household name when he took over as caretaker manager at Burnley in the wake of Dyche’s dismissal.

The former Preston and Blackpool player has managed Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers in his time as a coach.

After being sacked by Rovers in October 2020, Jackson landed at Burnley the following summer as their u23 manager.

He took an impressive 10-point haul from his first five games, landing the Manager of the Month award, but the Clarets ultimately went down.

Jackson is now available at 12/1 to land the full-time job.

The Rest

Rafa Benitez, Sam Allardyce and Nuno Espirito Santo are also on the longlist of contenders.

Michael Duff, who spent 12 years as a Burnley player before impressing as Cheltenham manager, is an intriguing long-shot, while Braga boss Carlos Carvalhal is apparently in contention too.

Outsiders include Michael Carrick, David Unsworth, Daniel Farke, Slaven Bilic, Roy Keane, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John Terry. Meanwhile, former Juventus hero Andrea Pirlo is a 100/1 outsider.
