Next Music Biopic Odds: Ozzy Osbourne And U2 Favourites For Biopic Treatment

We've recently seen Timothee Chalamet playing Bob Dylan, Jeremy Allen White starring as Bruce Springsteen, and most recently Jaafar Jackson stepping into the moon-walking shoes of his late uncle, Michael Jackson for a biopic about the musician.

Speculation has since been rife on betting sites about which musician or group will get the biopic treatment next.

It comes after Jackson's movie Michael scored the highest opening weekend ever for a biopic, taking $217million since it opened last week.

Michael has smashed the previous biopic record held by Queen musical film Bohemian Rhapsody, which starred Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury and Irish actor Aidan Gillen as John Reid, Queen's first manager.

Several movies are already in the works, including a Madonna biopic - with Ozark star Julia Garner as the Queen of Pop - and four separate Beatles biopics, directed by James Bond helmer Sam Mendes, are also being made.

But what other music projects do movie bosses have up their sleeves?

Ozzy Up Next

An Ozzy Osbourne biopic is 13/8 favourite on betting apps to be next.

The late Black Sabbath frontman passed away last July, aged 76, just 17 days after his last-ever gig.

Nearly a year after his passing, several stars have been linked with portraying the rock god, including his pal Yungblud.

Yungblud was a huge part of Ozzy's final farewell, which saw the singer perform with Sabbath for the last time at Villa Park, Birmingham.

Several other musicians played at the iconic one-off gig, including Yungblud, who sang an emotional cover of Black Sabbath hit Changes.

He would be a popular choice to play a young version of his late mate in an Ozzy biopic, but Leo Woodall, Machine Gun Kelly and Bill Skarsgard could also do a job.

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor and Hollywood star Johnny Depp would no doubt be in contention to play an older Ozzy, but Bill Hader has previously been backed by Ozzy's son Jack Osbourne.

He said on a March 2024 episode of The Osbournes Podcast: "You know who I want to play Dad? Bill Hader. Everyone thinks I’m f***in’ crazy until I show a side-by-side picture and that guy's ability to morph [into a character]."

Sharon agreed, admitting Hader would be a "brilliant" choice. But Ozzy was less than impressed, saying at the time: "F**k off."

Earlier this year, Jack admitted The Osbournes have picked a "phenomenal actor" to play the late rocker in a new biopic, but they've kept schtum about who it is.

"The recent success of the Michael Jackson biopic will have film bosses licking their lips for more music movies, and it wouldn't be a shock to see Yungblud or Leo Woodall playing the late, great Ozzy Obsourne, or Paul Mescal and Taron Egerton battling it out to portray Bono in the coming months. Egerton would also be fantastic as Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, but he would have to leave Dolly Parton to someone else. Kaley Cuoco or Amanda Seyfried are keen, but Dolly has a tough choice on her hands."

Mescal Vs Egerton For Bono Role

U2 are just 7/4 second favourites to get the biopic treatment next, but bosses would have a huge job on their hands finding an actor to portray Bono.

Gladiator II and Hamnet star Paul Mescal would no doubt be in with a chance of playing a young version of Bono.

He's been a massive big-screen success since shooting to fame in Normal People, and his stock rose even further last year when appearing in Hamnet, which received a Best Picture nomination.

Tom Holland has also been mentioned as a possible Bono, as has Daniel Radcliffe and Taron Egerton.

Egerton is no stranger to music biopics, after portraying Sir Elton John in 2019 movie Rocketman, and he could be the ideal Bono.

But Egerton could turn his hand to a screamier singer - Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson.

It's just 2/1 that Maiden land the next music biopic, and either Egerton or Wuthering Heights star Jacob Elordi would be a brilliant Bruce.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem is said to be a huge fan of the heavy metal band, and he could even be an outside choice.

Kaley Cuoco's 9 To 5

Dolly Parton has previously spoken about her life being made into a movie, and it's just 15/8 that a Dolly film is the next music biopic.

If so, there is no shortage of stars who want to play the country music legend.

In March, The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco admitted she would love to play the 9 to 5 hitmaker in a movie.

During a chat with NME, Cuoco's Vanished co-star Sam Claflin suggested she could play Parton one day, and she replied: "Oh yes! That is a great idea. I am in love with her; I just hear the nicest things about her."

The Housemaid actress Amanda Seyfried also admitted she would love to play Dolly one day.

Speaking to Deadline, she said: "Dolly Parton is one of the best human beings on the planet. So it would be fun to portray her."

But Dolly herself has previously admitted she would like to see Kristin Chenoweth play her.

In 2022, she said on the Mr Nashville Talks podcast: "I love Kristin Chenoweth. She’s just absolutely fantastic."

A Frank Sinatra biopic (5/2), directed by Martin Scorsese, is also thought to be in development, with Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio hot favourite to play Ol' Blue Eyes.

Welsh actor Luke Evans has previously been linked to a Sir Tom Jones biopic (3/1), but Tom himself once backed Robbie Williams for the job.

Speaking in 2017, he suggested to The Sun on Sunday: "I said Robbie would be it, maybe it would be better to get an actor. I can always do the voice if needs be so it doesn’t have to be a singer."

Several George Michael projects have hit screens over the years, but a traditional biopic is yet to materialise.

The White Lotus star Theo James has previously been tipped to play the late music icon.
