Punchestown Day 5 Tips:

Day Five of the Punchestown Racing Festival boasts another afternoon of top-class horse racing.

From the excitement of the Mares Champion Hurdle to the drama of the Handicap Hurdle, Day Five is sure to provide plenty of thrills and spills for racing fans and betting sites alike.

Below, we have three selections to consider for Saturday’s races.

3.50 - Coolmore N.H. Sires Mogul Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle - Love Envoi

Tactics will play a part in this small field but Love Envoi looks versatile in that department and she has an outstanding chance of bagging a first Grade 1 given her tremendous effort in defeat to Honeysuckle in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Harry Fry’s stable star was only headed entering the final half-furlong of that showpiece event and the reopposing Queens Brook, Echoes In Rain and Brandy Love couldn’t get anywhere near Love Envoi on the day.

This track should suit Love Envoi well so providing she is in the same form, which looks likely given this meeting has always been the plan for her, then she has a great chance of landing this big prize. Her price on betting apps could yet come in.

4.25 - Palmerstown House Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase - Flegmatik

British raiders don’t have a bad recent record in this race and Dan Skelton might just be able to continue that trend with Flegmatik, who looks tailor-made for this test.

Flegmatik is no winning machine but he absolutely loves going right-handed. Indeed, his last three wins have all come that way around and that number would surely have been four had he negotiated either of the last two fences at Kempton last time better than he did.

Those blunders cost him victory in that Coral Trophy Handicap Chase but he still ran a mighty race in defeat and one that gives him a cracking chance here despite a 5lb rise.

A strong traveller that normally jumps well, he should be able to potter around in midfield under Sean Quinlan before picking his way through and delivering his challenge late on.

His chances will increase if it dries out a bit but he handles soft fine, so keep an eye on his price on horse racing betting sites.

5.30 - Fitzwilliam Sports Handicap Hurdle - An Epic Song

Wildly competitive but An Epic Song ran a screamer in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and he’ll be well served by dropping back in trip for his return to action.

Beaten just a head after travelling strongly through that festival contest, An Epic Song shouldn’t be inconvenienced by a 2lb rise in the weights because he just loves the hurly burly of a big field handicap.

Martin Brassil’s charge remains lightly-raced and open to more progress, and he now returns to the scene his hugely impressive course and distance success from 2021.

An Epic Song ticks a lot of boxes for a stable flying high after plundering Wednesday’s Gold Cup and, granted some luck in running, which you always need in races like this, then he rates a very appealing each-way play.
