NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Dallas Stars Predictions, Odds for Feb. 7

Leafs vs. Stars Preview

It’s the second of two matches between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Dallas Stars this season, with the Leafs winning the first game, 4-1, back on Oct. 26. The Leafs have won five consecutive games against the Stars while posting a 17-4-0 record over their past 21 meetings. Sports betting on the NHL is only going to get more interesting post-Allstar game as teams shuffle around the standings and more trades are made to separate the playoff teams from the also-rans.

Leafs Insights

The noose is tightening a little more in Leafs’ land, after their 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on home ice Monday night. Sloppy play – especially on a player change at the end of a power play which saw Kyle MacLean get behind the defense for a breakaway and the Isles’ second goal – had Leafs’ coach Sheldon Keefe exasperated in the news conference afterwards.

The Leafs have a lot of millionaires on their roster and nothing but playoff crap-outs to show for it, on top of that 57-year Stanley Cup drought. As of this morning, the Leafs are at 25-15-8, for 58 points, fourth in the Atlantic Division, sixth in the Eastern Conference. The top three teams from each of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference make it, then the next two best teams. The Leafs as of this morning would make it, along with the Detroit Red Wings, but the Islanders are right on their tail, with 54 points.

Calle Järnkrok is week-to-week with a broken knuckle, and David Kämpf is also out with an undisclosed issue.  Toronto’s power play currently sits at 8th in the NHL at 25 per cent, but their penalty has been bad all season – 77.8 per cent, 23rd in the league.

Ilya Samsonov is listed as probable starter for the Leafs tonight (8-4-5, with two shutouts, 3.35 GAA, .879 SV%). Auston Matthews is still setting a 70-goal pace up front, with 40 to date.

Stars Insights

Dallas is having a great year – 31-13-6, for 68 points, just five back of the Vancouver Canucks for No. 1 in the Western Conference. They’re coming into this game on a four-game winning streak, with a 15-5-4 road record. Scott Wedgewood is listed as probable starter in goal for the Stars tonight (13-4-4, with one shutout, 2.98 GAA, .899 SV%).

Both teams are elite on faceoffs – Dallas is 54.6 per cent (second in the NHL), and the Leafs are 54.4 per cent (third).

Moneyline 1.74 (Leafs), 2.15 (Stars)

Spread -1.5 2.70 (Leafs), +1.5 1.45 (Stars)

Over/Under 6.5

On the NHL betting front, with that road record, go with the Stars on the Moneyline, despite the fact they have a back-up goaltender going in there. The Leafs are going to have to make some moves at the trade deadline, especially with their weak corps on defense.
