Reports suggest that the Dutchman will be handed a £150 million budget to rebuild the squad, which slumped to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

That could be topped up by player sales, giving the former Ajax supremo a substantial war chest as he bids to make the Red Devils more competitive next term.

Who could bolster his squad? We have listed the top six names linked with a move to Old Trafford and rounded up some of the intriguing long-shots.

Frenkie de Jong

De Jong played a starring role when Ten Hag led Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals back in 2019. That earned the midfield maestro a €75m move to Barcelona.

He has made close to 100 appearances for the Blaugrana, but he only has one Copa del Rey title to show for it.

Barcelona are also in rebuilding mode after falling behind Real Madrid in the pecking order, and manager Xavi could be tempted to part ways with de Jong to boost his budget.

He gave a cryptic answer when asked about the midfielder on the final day of the season. “Frenkie is a great player, he’s a beast – I like him and I think he can be part of an important era of the club,” said Xavi. “We will see the economic situation of the club… but I like De Jong.”

Barca may have secured a large loan from Goldman Sachs, but they are still in a perilous financial position, and that has presented United with a big opportunity. The midfield is clearly a priority.

Paul Pogba is leaving at the end of the month, as is Nemanja Matić, meaning just Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes, so reinforcements are needed. De Jong fits the bill, and Man Utd are now priced at just 1/5 with Ladbrokes to sign him.

Jurrien Timber

The defence is another major concern for Man Utd. Only six Premier League teams conceded more goals than them last season and Harry Maguire endured a torrid campaign.

Raphaël Varane should improve next term as he adapts to life in England, but Victor Lindelöf has never fully convinced, and Eric Bailly is set to leave.

Signing a commanding centre-back will be a priority this summer.

Timber is at the front of the queue after putting in a string of superb performances for Ajax this season.

“He is another great leader that was trained at Ajax,” said Ten Hag during his final interview at the club. “Besides his football skills he has the personality to become a captain.”

That is precisely the sort of character that the Red Devils need in their squad, and a swift reunion with Ten Hag could be on the cards this summer according to football betting sites.

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen sparked a scramble for his signature when he rejected a contract extension from Brentford.

The former Ajax, Tottenham and Inter Milan star joined the Bees on a short-term deal in the second half of last season after recovering from the cardiac arrest he suffered at last summer’s Euros.

He delivered a string of superb performances, showing that he still has what it takes to carve open Premier League defences with ease.

United are the 4/5 favourites to lure Eriksen to Old Trafford, but BetVictor also put Spurs (6/4) in the mix, with Antonio Conte thought to be keen to work with the Dane once again.

Should Ten Hag win the race to sign him, Eriksen's arrival would put pressure on Bruno Fernandes and plug a gap in the squad left by Pogba and Juan Mata, so the Red Devils could step up efforts to sign him soon.

The Brazilian winger dazzled for Ajax throughout the 2021-22 campaign. The Dutch champions boast a wealth of quality in attack, but Antony was clearly the jewel in the crown.

He is remarkably creative, very dynamic going forward and blessed with a fierce long-range strike. Antony is also two-footed and he can deliver plenty of goals and assists.

Ten Hag is renowned for playing forwards out of position to cram as many talented players into the team as possible, but Antony’s versatility makes him an attractive option and United are the 1/5 favourites to sign him this summer.

Pau Torres

United have been linked with a move for the Spanish defender for the past few years. Torres has formed a rock-solid partnership with veteran Raul Albiol at Villarreal, which powered them to Europa League glory in 2021.

Unai Emery’s men went all the way to the Champions League semi-finals last term, and the Red Devils could do with a player like Torres.

He is strong, tenacious in the tackle and blessed with strong positional awareness, making him an ideal candidate to bolster a shaky backline.

Man Utd are joint-favourites with Tottenham in the betting to sign him at 9/5 apiece with 10Bet. However, Unibet go 17/20 on Torres to stay at Villarreal, a more likely outcome.

Ruben Neves

Ruben Neves

The Manchester United midfield needs several reinforcements, and Neves looks like a good fit. He has been running the Wolves’ engine room for the past five years, but he is still only 25, and he has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most consistent players.

He is certainly more cultured on the ball than the likes of Fred and McTominay, and he could be the man to finally fill Michael Carrick’s shoes in the Man Utd team.

Wolves will be loath to lose Neves this summer, but he is reportedly seeking a new challenge at a more prestigious club. Barcelona are the favourites to sign Neves (7/4), but they are operating under major financial constraints.

The Red Devils are well in the running, best priced at 5/1 with Paddy Power. They also face competition from Arsenal (4/1), but the lure of Old Trafford could prove more tempting.

The Rest

Man United have been linked with a huge array of players this summer. Additional midfield options besides de Jong and Neves include Youri Tielemans (8/1), free-kick specialist James Ward-Prowse (12/1) and Jude Bellingham (14/1).

They are also linked with a move for another Wolves man, Adama Traore. His loan move to Barcelona did not quite work out, but he remains an explosive winger with the ability to terrify Premier League defenders. Man Utd are the 7/1 favourites with Unibet to sign him.

Another forward option could be Raphinha of Leeds. Arsenal, Barcelona and Tottenham lead the betting for the Brazilian forward's signature, while Man Utd are a 20/1 outside shot.
