2021 Guaranteed Rate Bowl Game

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl is typically played at the Arizona Chase Field Stadium. Teams from the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences take part in the game. It’s changed names over the years, from the Copper Bowl to the Insight Bowl and then Buffalo Wild Bowl and Cactus Bowl. Confusingly, it’s also gone by the name of the Cheez-It Bowl, which now has its own college football non-playoff title. Guaranteed Rate became the bowl sponsor in 2020 for this matchup.

West Virginia Mountaineers finished the Big 12 season 4-5 and 6-6, ending on a high with a tight 34-28 victory vs Kansas. It was the story of the 2021-22 season as West Virginia secured a few tight wins or narrow losses. The Mountaineers particularly struggled on the road, recording 2-4. That doesn’t bode well as the WV team head to Phoenix for the Guaranteed Rate bowl game.

A change of personnel in the regular season will certainly help West Virginia going forward. In fact, West Virginia led the way for transfers this year on 27. Brian Polendey is on his way to WV following time at Colorado State. He fills the gap left by T.J. Banks, who entered the transfer portal at the beginning of December. Head coach Neal Brown has a good track record in bowl games with two wins, one coming in New Orleans back in 2017.

West Virginia can still count on quarterback Jarret Doege, who made over 2,900 passing yards for 19 touchdowns this season. Leddie Brown will also hope to build on his 13 touchdowns in the bowl game. If you can find player props at Canadian sportsbooks, Brown is the smart move for first touchdown.

Minnesota Golden Gophers have a poor record in Guaranteed Rate Bowl games (0-3) but 2021 should be the year they turn that around.

They ended the season 6-2 and 8-4 with one of the meanest defenses in town. An average of 18.25 points conceded suggests a defense that doesn’t let many teams in. Couple that with West Virginia’s turmoil in the transfers and it points to a comfortable Minnesota victory.
