The quality of the Ryanair Chase has improved in recent years since it was upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2008 - but the presence of last year’s winner Allaho in the field may mean some of his rivals take up alternative engagements.

Five favourites have prevailed in the last decade, so it has been a good race for punters. But with horse racing betting sites offering short odds on Allaho, many bettors will be on the hunt for each-way Ryanair Chase tips at bigger prices.

Ryanair Chase Runners in Focus

Here's an in-depth look at some of the leading contenders for the 2022 Ryanair Chase:

Allaho

The eight-year-old provided Willie Mullins with his fourth Ryanair Chase win in six years when victorious in this race last season in impressive style under Rachael Blackmore.

Allaho had previously finished third in a stamina-sapping RSA Chase the year before but has seemed to relish intermediate distances since.

He won the Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase on his reappearance this season by two lengths despite jumping left, before defeating old rival Fakir D’Oudairies in a Grade 2 at Thurles.

He looks a worthy favourite as he arrives in form, while there are no question marks about ground conditions and he has shown at the previous three festivals that he handles the track well. Allaho deserves to be a short-priced favourite but his Ryanair Chase odds don't offer much value for punters at current prices.

Janidil

The JP McManus-owned gelding is often second or third-string for Willie Mullins in races of this nature but he always runs with credit. He beat better-fancied stablemates Franco De Port and Asterion Forlonge in the Grade 1 Underwriting Exchange Gold Cup Novice Chase at Fairyhouse last season before chasing home Energumene in the Ryanair Novice Chase at the Punchestown Festival over two miles.

Janidil pushed Allaho to within two lengths in the John Durkan Memorial Chase on his reappearance before finding three miles too far in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas.

This drop back to 2m5f will suit him well, although his lack of experience at Cheltenham (he has only raced there once when 5th in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle in 2020) is a slight concern in comparison to many of his rivals.

Shan Blue

Having backed Shan Blue for both the Charlie Hall Chase and the King George VI Chase this season, it was disappointing to see him suffer an injury after a fall at the third-last fence when 20 lengths clear at Wetherby.

The eight-year-old had put in a fantastic round of jumping up to that point and would have been a single-figure price for the King George VI Chase as a result.

The Dan Skelton-trained gelding won the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton last season in impressive style before finishing only fifth in the Marsh Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham. That was the second time he underperformed at the track (having finished a well-beaten sixth in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle in 2020) and I feel he is better suited to flat tracks than Cheltenham.

Melon

Melon was only beaten a nose by Samcro in the Marsh Novices’ Chase here in 2020 but was pulled up in this race behind stablemate Allaho last year. He has performed with credit on both of his starts this season but will likely find a few too good once again.
