Championship Top Scorer Odds: Chuba Akpom Leads The Golden Boot Betting

The Championship season is almost over but there is plenty still to play for in the second tier, with betting sites constantly tweaking their odds in various markets.

The race for top spot appears to be done and dusted, with Burnley well clear of the chasing pack.

Similarly, there is a runaway leader in the battle to finish as the division’s top scorer - but with some teams having as many as nine games remaining, there could yet be a late twist.

Let’s check out the latest betting odds before analysing the candidates to end the campaign as the division’s leading goal-getter.

Middlesbrough’s Akpom Odds-On To Claim Prize

Chuba Akpom is the odds-on favourite at 1/16 with football betting sites to finish as the Championship’s top scorer this season.

Middlesbrough loaned the forward back to Greek outfit PAOK last term, and there were rumours that he could rejoin the club permanently before the start of the current campaign.

Yet Boro opted to keep Akpom around and they will be delighted they made that choice. He has scored 24 goals in 31 appearances to date, giving him an excellent average of 0.77 goals per game.

Akpom has found the back of the net six times more than any of his peers, hence the fact UK bookmakers except him to win the Golden Boot.

Boro will hope he adds a few more goals to his tally as they seek automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Gyokores Closest Contender Amid Coventry Charge

Because Akpom has such a sizeable lead in the scoring charts, there is value to be found elsewhere in the market.

Many punters, for instance, will like the look of Viktor Gyokeres at 12/1 with Unibet, with the Sweden international certainly capable of closing the gap to Akpom.

Gyokeres has already beaten his tally of 17 from last season, having made the net bulge 18 times in 2022/23.

He was in fantastic form prior to the international break, getting his name on the scoresheet six times in his last eight league outings.

Gyokores was also on target for his country recently, scoring in a 5-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan.

That will have further boosted his confidence and a resurgent Coventry team will be looking at Gyokores to lead them into the play-offs.

Tella Leading The Way For Champions-Elect Burnley

With an average of two goals per game, Burnley are by far and away the most prolific team in the Championship

Vincent Kompany has done a fantastic job at Turf Moor this term, overhauling the team’s style of play while also getting results. It is safe to say Burnley will be playing Premier League football again next season.

The Clarets have shared the goals around, with no fewer than 19 players having chipped in since the beginning of the campaign.

Ben Brereton Diaz

Nathan Tella is their main man up top, though: the versatile attacker, who has been deployed in a variety of positions, has scored 17 goals so far.

Burnley have a game in hand on the likes of Middlesbrough and Coventry, so it is not out of the question that Tella finishes on top of this list - although odds of 33/1 with Bet365 show that it is a long shot.

Morris Essential Part Of Luton’s Promotion Push

Luton lost their influential manager Nathan Jones earlier this season, but even that setback could not knock them off course.

The Hatters have continued to punch above their weight under Rob Edwards, whose team still have an outside chance of automatic promotion.

Key to their challenge is Carlton Morris, who has found the net 16 times up to now and is listed at 66/1 with William Hill to finish as the second tier’s top scorer.

The 27-year-old’s exploits this year are somewhat unexpected given he has never before got into double figures in a league season.

Morris has looked particularly dangerous over the last couple of months, scoring five goals in his last eight appearances.

Piroe And Estupinan Among Rank Outsiders

Joel Piroe (200/1), Zian Flemming, Ben Brereton and Oscar Estupinan (all 250/1) are among the rank outsiders with betting apps

Swansea City’s Piroe trails Akpom by 11 goals and is playing for a team that has the second-worst record in the Championship since the start of February.

Like Piroe, Flemming and Estupinan have also scored on 13 occasions. The former has become Millwall’s talisman as Gary Rowett’s men attempt to book a place in the Championship play-offs, while Hull City’s Estupinan has notched just one goal in his last 11 matches.

Brereton has scored exactly half the number of goals as Akpom, so the Chile international needs a miracle to finish top of the charts.
