How We Test and Rate World Cup Betting Sites & Offers

We at Gambling.com have decades of combined experience testing and reviewing sports betting sites.

After years of analyzing sites and reviewing feedback from real bettors, we’ve seen firsthand what makes or breaks great football betting sites. Our goal is to connect you with books that aren’t just safe but offer great odds and a smooth experience from sign-up to payout.

Our team of industry-leading experts grades each betting site they review on a scale of one to 10 across 10 categories that we deem most important to sports bettors.

To determine these scores, we don’t just sit behind a screen and rate sites—we test them, compare them, and examine the user experience to see how they stack up. Our process ensures we only recommend betting sites that meet our high standards.

Promoting responsible gambling is at the heart of what we do. That’s why we only review fully licensed operators and are committed to offering tools and resources that address responsible betting practices.

How to Get Started Betting on the World Cup

Some sites are already carrying World Cup odds on the outright winner of the FIFA World Cup, with many more options to follow.

Looking ahead to the tournament, the one thing we can be certain of is that you will need at least one online betting account before you can start placing wagers.

Choose one or more of the betting sites we recommend above.

Once you have an online betting account, you’re then in a position to start placing bets on the World Cup.

When the tournament gets underway, there will be opportunities to back individual matches, the various group stage winners/runners up, and the market for the top-scoring Golden Boot winner.

Tips for Betting on the World Cup

Consider Group Winners Over Outright Winner

As with any major sporting competition, the unpredictable nature of the World Cup group stage can make betting on the outright winner particularly difficult. Top World Cup betting sites offer group betting, an option that allows you to pick the country you believe will win a group, a considerably easier task than choosing the outright winner.

When betting on the opening rounds, looking at each team's condition, particularly how they performed in the World Cup qualifiers—or other tournaments—in the preceding years, is essential. Every World Cup tends to see one or two big surprises in the early stages, so these options might be better than looking at individual matches.

However, once the competition progresses, the stakes go up, and picking outright winners becomes easier as a team that advanced against the odds suddenly reverts to form against an established international football powerhouse.

Given that the field will have narrowed and the stronger teams will have shown their quality, betting on the outright winner may also prove a little more manageable at this stage.

Use Each-Way Bets Wisely

Placing a bet using that method might be the best option if you still cannot distinguish an outright winner.

Look at games pitting one of the traditional favorites against a minor nation. While picking the winner of such a clash is straightforward, it will not be well-priced, but those looking a little deeper will still be able to find good value.

Favor the Favorites

The past few World Cup tournaments have gone mainly to form, with pre-tournament favourites often living up to expectations. That trend means that we shouldn’t look too far away from the top of the betting market to find the World Cup winner, with an enormous gulf in quality between some of the teams in the tournament.

How Does the World Cup Work?

FIFA's six continental confederations organize their qualifying competitions, with all 211 FIFA member associations eligible to participate. The reigning World Cup champions, Argentina, will also go through the qualifying stages as usual. However, the United States, Canada, and Mexico are given an automatic berth in the Group Stage as 2026's host countries.

The 2026 World Cup has been expanded from 32 teams to 48 teams, competing in 12 groups of four teams each. Each team then plays each other in a round-robin format. The top two teams in each group will automatically advance to the last 32, while eight of the best-placed third teams will also advance.

From that point onwards, the 2026 World Cup will become a straight knockout tournament, with extra time and, if needed, penalties to decide the winners if a match is drawn after 90 minutes all the way through to the final.

FIFA World Cup Tournament Awards

The following awards are presented after the World Cup:

  • The Golden Ball: This award is presented to the competition's best player. FIFA creates a shortlist, and representatives of the media vote for the winner.
  • The Golden Glove: This award is given to the best goalkeeper.
  • The Golden Boot: The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals throughout the World Cup. If there is a tie, the player with the most assists wins. If there is still a tie, the player with the fewest minutes on the pitch wins. Bronze and Silver awards are given to the players who finish second and third, respectively.
  • FIFA Fair Play Trophy: This award is given to the team with the best record of exemplary fair play behavior in football, both on and off the pitch. Each player and team official receives a fair play medal, while $50,000 worth of equipment is also awarded for youth football development in that country.
  • MVP of the World Cup Final Match Trophy: This trophy is presented to the player voted by the FIFA Technical Study Group experts to have played the best in the World Cup final.
