Eurovision Tips:

The old adage is semi-finals are for winning. Not at Eurovision it seems. And certainly not in a year where the semi-finals are televote only, but the grand final is the familiar 50-50 jury and televote format.

The Eurovision betting market shape to the semi-finals is bonkers. Finland are 4/11 to beat Sweden in semi-final one, but Sweden are odds-on for outright glory.

While in semi-final two, Austria are evens, yet they can be backed in excess of 115 on betting exchange sites for the overall win.

Eurovision Odds: Semi-Final One

One of the strongest line-ups ever assembled in a semi-final. In any normal year Finland, Sweden and Norway would be contenders for outright glory and Israel, Croatia, Czech Republic and Moldova all realistic top 10 contenders.

The top of the market is fascinating, with Finland expected to landslide the televote as show closers.

Funnily enough, I feel like the televote will be closer in the semi-final than the final as Eurovision hardcore fans will vote for their old sweetheart Loreen, the 2012 Swedish champion.

I said in a previous column on here I could envisage a scenario where the favourites flip-flop after the semi-final and that view has not changed.

While Sweden have brought broadly identical staging from their national final, Iceland have elevated the entire audiovisual extravaganza.

From the clips we have seen it is frankly sensational. The received wisdom is Käärijä won’t bag enough jury points but momentum is a powerful drug for jurors, and the presentation and overall show is so strong I believe it will still manage a top five jury finish.

That could get it over the line. The way to play the markets is to back Finland now for top Scandinavia at 5/2 with Ladbrokes

This is an effective match with Sweden and takes out the risk of another contender emerging from the pack.

Eurovision Odds: Semi-Final Two

If semi-final one is the Snooker World Championship at the Crucible; semi-final two is very much the pool table at the local boozer on a Friday night.

Nine of the 16 songs are ostensibly terrible, and a lot of time and energy could be saved by just drawing the finalists out of a hat, or maybe just letting the top three on the night through to Saturday.

Honestly, this is an embarrassment to the contest. But every cloud; and good value bets must abound as a result. Austria have the best song in the semi-final, by quite a long way.

It’s a televtoe friendly electro-pop number with a catchy dance, hook and chorus. That sounds better than me telling you it’s about being possessed by the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe.

They also have a good draw in stall 13 of 16 and are surrounded by absolute tripe. This will stand out as quality and 4/6 on betting sites for an Austria victory represents a strong selection.

The only danger to Austria I see is Cyprus. However, stall six will be tricky to win from and Andrew Lambrou’s song is more of a jury friendly act.

So, the way I want to play it is to back Cyprus for a top 15 finish on Saturday night at Evens with Unibet

They will definitely qualify, and are guaranteed 24 points from Greece on the night, so they are already in a decent starting position to make the top 15.
