A surge of interest in football betting in the UK has pitched England as firm favourites to beat Italy in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final amongst British bookmakers.

England scraped into their first major tournament final since 1966 when they beat Denmark 2-1 in extra-time on Wednesday. The night before, Italy required penalties to bypass Spain in a classic encounter at Wembley.

England have been one of the favourites to win Euro 2020 since before the tournament started, yet their odds on UK betting sites have been woefully low for most of the summer – driven down largely by bettors heavily backing Gareth Southgate’s troops.

It means that English punters seeking to bet on Euro 2020 this weekend are getting different odds compared to those wagering in the US and the rest of Europe.

It perhaps belies an overconfidence fans have in England that Italy will hope to exploit when they rock up in west London on Sunday evening.

Euro 2020 Final Odds

According to UK bookmakers, England are favourites at 4/5 to win the Euro 2020 final. That gives them an implied probability of success of 55.6%. Meanwhile, Italy are out at Evens (1/1).

However, some US bookmakers have priced this game up differently. Their markets like the NJ sports betting markets are indicating England have just a 41% chance of winning on Sunday, while Italy are 54% likely to claim what would be a second European crown.

The difference in odds highlights just how strong the market is for backing England in the UK, compared to elsewhere. Indeed, Italian bookmakers have the match as effectively a 50/50 split between the two teams.

Boost For Bookmakers and Punters

England’s continuing run at Euro 2020 has certainly been a boost for UK bookmakers as well as some lucky punters.

Entain, who own brands such as Ladbrokes and Coral, saw their share price rise 2% in the morning after England’s semi-final victory over Denmark. A raft of betting options and the expectation that more punters will stick some money on the final is believed to be behind the rise.

As for punters, those who backed Italy at the start of the tournament are on to make a solid profit should the Azzurri edge their hosts on Sunday. Some football betting sites had Italy as far out as 8/1 to win the Euros when it all kicked off last month – and that price only truly began to drop on June 27 when Roberto Mancini’s men edged Austria in extra time in the last-16.

The moneyline odds could well change between now and kick-off and that could further narrow the odds on England winning the Euros, which actually briefly peaked at 10/1 on June 23 when it looked as though they’d be playing France in the first knockout round.
