Paul Townend Runners, Odds and Entries

Paul Townend is the huge betting favourite to be the leading jockey at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival and it’s hardly a surprise considering the horses he will be riding.

The Irishman is the principal rider for crack trainer Willie Mullins and looks set to have a successful meeting, with Townend having already recorded 28 wins at the Festival and it would be a major surprise if he draws a blank at Prestbury Park.

Cheltenham Offers

Here are five of Townend’s best chances at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, with some betting sites offering a top jockey betting market without this strong favourite.

Paul Townend Top Five Cheltenham Festival 2024 Chances

Lossiemouth – Mares’ Hurdle – 4.10 Tuesday

Lossiemouth has been trading at odds-on for this Day One encounter for a few weeks now, with punters having packed her into their ante-post Cheltenham accumulators on betting apps.

She clearly looks the one to beat on form, with the five-year-old having won on her seasonal debut, when winning the Unibet Hurdle on January 27. It was a comfortable nine-and-a-half length victory for a horse who was the winner of the Triumph Hurdle at last year’s Festival.

This might end up being a steering job for Townend who was on board the mare at Cheltenham a few weeks ago.

El Fabiolo – Champion Chase – 3.30 Wednesday

Townend will ride the strong favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with El Fabiolo having won his past seven races and many punters regard this horse as bombproof.

Twelve months ago, the seven-year-old claimed a convincing victory in the Arkle Chase when beating Jonbon by five-and-a-half lengths, with the horse then enjoying another big win at the Punchestown Festival a year later.

More recently, there has been a victory at Cork in December, while Townend was reunited with the horse at the Dublin Racing Festival to win the Ladbrokes Dublin Chase.

Jade De Grugy – Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle – 4.50 Thursday

We would expect Townend to be leading jockey by the time he takes his chances on Jade De Grugy on Day Three of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. However, this horse is less of a banker than Lossiemouth and El Fabiolo in the eyes of horse racing betting sites.

At the time of writing, the mare is trading as second favourite behind Brighterdaysahead, with the latter boasting a strong track record, and we could see a hammer and tongs battle between the pair.

The five-year-old has scored at Leopardstown and Fairyhouse this season, with the Kenny Alexander-owned runner putting her 100% record on the line.

Galopin Des Champs – Gold Cup – 3.30 Friday

The Cheltenham Gold Cup always takes some winning, although it’s possible that Galopin Des Champs will go off odds-on to win the Festival’s blue riband race.

The eight-year-old was given a fantastic ride by Townend 12 months ago, when landing a seven-length success in this race, kicking clear of Bravemansgame and there has been every indication that a repeat triumph could be on the cards.

Townend was on board the horse when winning the Savills Chase at Leopardstown by an astonishing 28 lengths, while the runner was comfortable when fending off three other rivals in the Irish Gold Cup.

Allegorie De Vassy – Mares’ Chase – 4.50 Friday

According to the Cheltenham betting odds, Dinoblue is the one to beat in the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase, with Mark Walsh set to ride the favourite for trainer Willie Mullins.

However, stablemate Allegorie De Vassy has to have claims based on her achievements to date and Townend should be full of confidence when he takes his chances over two miles, four and a half furlongs.

The horse was sent off as the 13/8 favourite in this race last year and finished second to Impervious, although the last outing at Naas saw a four-length success against market leader Riviere D’etel.
