Gordon Elliott Runners, Odds and Entries

Two-time top Cheltenham Festival trainer Gordon Elliott has had his ups and downs in recent years, but he retains a level of firepower that is the envy of most training establishments.

Gordon Elliott Runners Today

County Meath-based Elliott heads to the Cheltenham Festival as 8/1 second favourite on betting sites to train more winners than any of his rivals and, although it’s hard to see him outpointing the all-conquering Willie Mullins team.

It would be a surprise if Elliott didn’t snag a few big prizes through the week, while it would probably be disappointing for the stable if they didn’t win the Stayers’ Hurdle given the strength of their challenge in the Thursday feature.

Let’s take a look at his best chance through the week.

Gordon Elliot Top Five Cheltenham Festival 2024 Chances

Salvador Ziggy – National Hunt Chase - 5.30 Tuesday

Last year’s Pertemps Final runner-up was always going to make a better chaser, especially when granted a test of stamina, and he looks a real player in the 3m6f National Hunt Chase on the opening day.

Don’t worry that this horse hasn’t been seen since disappointing in a valuable hurdle race in the USA in October because he wasn’t seen for most of last season either, but still ran a huge race in defeat in the Pertemps.

The step up to this sort of distance could unlock serious improvement from a horse who remains unexposed over fences.

Coko Beach/Delta Work/Galvin/Conflated – Cross Country Chase - 4.10 Wednesday

Realistically, only Minella Indo stands in the way of Gordon Elliott’s team in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival

Galvin, Delta Work, Coko Beach and Conflated fill four of the top five places in the ante-post market, all of which would have to go close in a race like this on their best form.

Picking between them is not easy but Coko Beach comes into the race in the best form after a comfortable success in a cross-country race at Punchestown in February.

Jalon D’oudairies – Champion Bumper - 3.30 Thursday

Nothing speaks louder for how high connections rate Jalon D’oudairies than the fact that Elliott had no hesitation nominating him for the Champion Bumper, even though Gigginstown have tended to shy away from this race in recent years.

An impressive point winner last March, he made it two from two under rules by making all the running in a strong bumper at Punchestown in December, finishing his race off strongly.

He looks a cracking prospect according to the latest horse racing betting sites.

Teahupoo – Stayers’ Hurdle - 4.50 Thursday

It looks as though both Teahupoo and Irish Point are going to take their chance in the Stayers’ Hurdle and, along with last year’s winner Sire Du Berlais, they complete a mightily strong hand for the Elliott team.

Teahupoo went close to justifying favouritism in the race last year and has been purposely kept fresh for this race since winning the Hatton’s Grace in early December.

He looks sure to run a big race, as does the same owners Irish Point, who absolutely bolted up in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown.

It would be quite the feat if 12-year-old Sire Du Berlais pulled it off again but he does come alive in the spring.

Brighterdaysahead – Mares’ Novices Hurdle

Probably the individual from the Elliott team with the best chance of success at Cheltenham. Elliott believes Brighterdaysahead could be as good a horse he's had at the Festival.

This unbeaten mare is the apple of her trainer’s eye, and it was impossible not to be impressed by the way she jumped and travelled all over her rivals at Navan last time.

A chaser in the making, she looks set to bag some top prizes over hurdles along the way, beginning with the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, where she is going to take a serious amount of stopping.

Drying ground would ask a new question of her, but it's hard to find many holes in her chance.
