Next Burton Albion Manager Odds: Rowett Favourite For Vacant Role At Brewers
Burton Albion are on the lookout for a new manager and the best betting sites have opened the market on who will replace Dino Maamria.
The Brewers parted company with Maamria after a defeat by Stevenage at the weekend.
That result extended the club’s winless run to six League One matches, with Burton now just two places and four points above the relegation zone.
The club will no doubt want to make a permanent appointment as soon as possible ahead of the busy festive period.
There have been suggestions that Burton already have someone lined up given they have not revealed the identity of an interim boss, but that is just speculation for now.
Who will be next through the door at the Pirelli Stadium? Let’s take a look at the contenders.
Rowett Favourite For Second Spell At Burton
Gary Rowett’s first managerial role was at Burton between 2012 and 2014.
He took the club to the upper echelons of League Two before being poached by Birmingham City in October 2014.
Rowett has since managed Derby County, Stoke City and Millwall - all in the Championship. It is therefore slightly surprising that he is such a strong favourite for the Burton job at Evens with football betting sites.
Notwithstanding the romantic notion of a return to the Pirelli, Rowett would presumably prefer to hold out for a job in the second tier.
Burton are not exactly flush with cash either, so this would represent a clear backwards step in the 49-year-old’s career.
Cotterill And Brennan In Contention For Role
Steve Cotterill (4/1) was a prolific striker for Burton in the late 1980s and he could be on their managerial shortlist.
His most recent role was with Shrewsbury Town, whom he led to a 12th-place finish in League One last season.
Cotterill would bring vast experience to the role, although he turned down an approach from Cheltenham Town in September and it is not clear whether he is looking to get back into the game right now.
Dean Brennan is available at the same odds of 4/1 with Parimatch. The Irishman is currently at the helm of Barnet, who sit third in the National League.
Despite Burton’s present struggles, Brennan may be tempted by the chance to jump up two divisions.
Bonner And Ainsworth Could Be Considered
Mark Bonner is next on the list of candidates at 8/1 with BetVictor.
The 38-year-old left boyhood club Cambridge United last month, as the board decided to part ways with the manager with the club sitting 18th in the League One table - which is higher than Burton are now.
Gareth Ainsworth enjoyed plenty of success in the third tier with Wycombe Wanderers.
He is a 12/1 shot to take charge of Burton, but there may be a few worries about Ainsworth’s capacity to thrive away from Wycombe given his failings at Queens Park Rangers.
McGrath A Dark Horse But Bowyer An Outsider
John McGrath can also be backed at 12/1. As a player the midfielder made 247 appearances for Burton, and he was part of the side that won promotion to the Football League in 2009.
McGrath has been in charge of non-league Mickleover since 2016. This would therefore represent a huge step up for the 43-year-old, but his Burton links make him an outsider for the role.
Enticing Lee Bowyer to this corner of the East Midlands would be a coup.
The ex-England international was installed as manager of the Montserrat national team earlier this year, so odds of 20/1 should probably be overlooked.
Cowley And Hasselbaink Not Expected To Be Appointed
Danny Cowley is another outsider at 20/1 with betting apps. He has been out of work for almost a year now, having left Portsmouth in January.
Cowley is known to be an excellent man-manager and he could give the Burton players a much-needed confidence boost.
It is hard to see Albion turning back to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The Dutchman has already had two spells in the Pirelli Stadium dugout, but the most recent one ended in disappointment.
Hasselbaink, who is available at 20/1 to return to Burton, would probably be loath to leave his role as an England assistant ahead of Euro 2024.
