Best Oscars Markets to Bet on

You can actually bet on almost any Academy Award, odds opening on more and more titles as the big night approaches - and, you will also be able to bet on things such as: “Who will give the longest acceptance speech?” and “Will the same film win Best Picture and Best Director?”

Oscars Betting Tips

Betting on the Oscars is tricky. It's not like betting on sports when nobody knows the outcome. However, our top Oscars betting tip is to follow the three preceding major awards that fall in January. In the past 21 years:

That is not a foolproof Oscars betting system, but it does narrow the field of odds. The next tip to consider when betting on the Academy Awards is to follow social issues, and other Oscars trends. For example:

  1. Real People - 12 of the last 18 Best Actors won for playing real people, like 2017 winner Gary Oldman (Winston Churchill). This used to be a good system for betting on all of the acting roles, but for women that had changed, until Olivia Colman (Queen Anne) sprung a surprise in 2019. She was the second Best Actress this decade to win for playing a real person. Renée Zellweger then won in 2020 for her portrayal of Judy Garland.
  2. Moonlight - #Oscarssowhite, or Oscars Whitewash, was a movement protesting against the lack of color in the Oscars nominations in 2016. The Academy stressed it would address this, so there were non-white nominations for 2017 - and it could be argued, there had to be a major winner. Moonlight, an independently-made film about a young black man, won Best Picture.
  3. MeToo - Female empowerment dominated Hollywood, and the world, in 2017, and was like many major social issues, reflected in the Oscars. Golden Globe Best Actor winner James Franco, a short price in the Oscars odds, was not nominated after being accused of sexually-exploitative behavior. Best Picture was won by a film with a dominant female lead for the first time since 2004 with The Shape Of Water taking the victory.

When are the other movie awards?

The biggest mover of the Oscars betting odds are the three other major awards, which will all take place in late February and the first half of March 2021: the Golden Globes coming on February 28, the Critics Choice on March 7, and the Screen Actors Guild's on March 14.

With the Oscars not announcing nominations until January 13, 2020, if there is going to be any early moves in the Oscars betting odds, they are likely to relate to December nominations:

Oscars History

April 2021 will see the 93rd Oscars being presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, each winner walking away with one of the famous golden statuettes that give the Academy Awards their name.

Since that first dinner on May 16, 1929, where a 15-minute ceremony handed out 15 statuettes, it has grown into a 3.5-hour production, televised live to 225 countries. A total of 3,120 Oscars have been awarded, here are the most recent big winners at the Academy Awards.
