How We Test and Rate Masters Golf Betting Sites

We at Gambling.com have decades of combined experience testing and reviewing sports betting sites. After years of analyzing sites and reviewing feedback from real bettors, we’ve seen firsthand what makes or breaks a great betting site. Our goal is to connect you with books that aren’t just safe but offer great Masters odds and a smooth experience from sign-up to payout.

Our team of industry-leading experts grades each of the betting sites they review on a scale of one to 10 across 10 different categories that we deem to be most important to sports bettors. To determine these scores, we don’t just sit behind a screen and rate sites—we test them, compare them, and dig into the user experience to see how they stack up. Our process ensures we only recommend betting sites that meet our high standards.

Promoting responsible gambling is at the heart of what we do. That’s why we only review fully licensed operators and are committed to offering tools and resources that address responsible betting practices.

How to Bet on the Masters

The Augusta Masters takes place in April of every year. Unlike the U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship, it is held at the same location each year at Augusta National Golf Club, meaning past performance can inform your betting.

Previous winners of the Masters are allowed to re-enter the competition as many times as they like, so the field is often saturated with golfers who are past their prime. This results in a field that includes many past champions no longer in top form, and sometimes, the odds are slimmer than you would normally see.

As a result, expect younger golfers who play well in the weeks preceding the Augusta Masters (keep an eye on the PGA tour) to shorten in price. Note the big names who play well in the week before the Masters.

Top Masters Golf Betting Markets

  • Tournament Winner: As with most other golf tournaments, Masters betting focuses heavily on the tournament winner at the top online betting sites. Pay close attention to the PGA tour events shortly before the Masters.
  • Masters Top-10 Finish: The top-10 finishing position market is also popular in Masters betting. The top 10 from the preceding year's Masters tournament can be a good indication of how the tournament will end up; however, there is often good value in backing outsiders.
  • Match Bets: This market remains popular in major international tournaments like the Ryder Cup. Bets are placed on who will shoot the lowest out of a two—or three-ball group, leading to some spectacular finishes coming down the 18th fairway.

Masters Golf Betting Tips

  1. Seek strong Par 5 players

    Seek strong Par 5 players

If you are selecting a tournament winner, focus on big hitters who do particularly well on par 5s. Most Masters winners have played the par 5s significantly under par.

  2. Look for draw ball naturals

    Look for draw ball naturals

Augusta's layout favors golfers who can effectively curve the ball from right to left (for right-handed players). Plenty of fairways are doglegs in this regard, so golfers who naturally draw the ball tend to be at an advantage.

  3. Stay away from the defending champ

Stay away from the defending champ

Defending the green jacket is virtually unheard of at The Masters, which may seem surprising, considering that 17 golfers have won the tournament more than once. Only three top professionals have managed to retain their titles: Jack Nicklaus (1965-66), Nick Faldo (1989-90), and Tiger Woods (2001-02).

History of the Masters Tournament

The Augusta Masters was started by amateur champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts, who both banded together to build the course, which opened in 1932.

The tournament was first played in 1934 and became immeasurably popular quickly due to Jones’s popularity and connections within the game.

The first Masters golf tournament began on March 22, 1934, and starting in 1940, it was scheduled to occur every year during the first week of April.

About the Augusta National Course

The land where the Augusta Golf Course was once Fruitland Nurseries, owned by the Berckmans family. Horticulturist Louis Alphonse Berckman collaborated with Masters founders Jones and Roberts to select plants and trees to define each hole of the course.

Masters Tournament Traditions

The Augusta National Golf Club has changed significantly over the years, but certain traditions remain diligently guarded. Membership is strictly by invitation only.

Since 1949, all members have received a green jacket, as does the winner of each Masters tournament. The winner must return his jacket to the clubhouse one year after his victory, where it is stored with other champions’ jackets in a designated cloakroom.

A Champions Dinner evening takes place before the Masters, at which the most recent tournament winner gets to select the menu for a gathering of previous winners.

Since 1960, a social contest has been played on the Wednesday before the Masters tournament on the par-3 course.
