Bruno Guimaraes once again found himself in the referee's notebook during Newcastle's recent 3-2 defeat to Manchester City, marking his sixth consecutive match with a caution.
This raises the questions of just how many consecutive bookings could Guimaraes receive and how many yellow cards will he accumulate by the end of the season.
As mentioned, the Brazilian midfielder has been booked in his last six games across all competitions, with four of them occurring in the Premier League, and betting sites have odds at the ready for Newcastle's upcoming clash with Fulham.
His yellow card against City means Guimaraes has received nine yellow cards in the league, and one more caution would result in the 26-year-old serving a two-game suspension for reaching double figures.
The Magpies are ravaged with injuries at present and Eddie Howe has conceded that a ban for one of his key players is ‘the last thing’ they need at the moment.
However, Bruno's overbearing presence in midfield makes it seem like another caution is inevitable.
Bruno is just five yellow cards away from equalling the Premier League season record of 14, a feat achieved by a total of eight players and with 17 games left to play, he could very well surpass this tally.
Bruno Set For Seventh Consecutive Yellow
When Newcastle recorded a routine 3-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League back in December, Guimaraes managed to stay out of the referee’s notebook.
However, given his current run, Bruno will no doubt lead the way on football betting sites as the favourite to pick up a yellow card when the two face off in the FA Cup on January 27.
The Magpies midfielder was just 2/1 to receive a card in his most recent match and he duly obliged in the 21st minute when he mistimed a slide tackle on Mateo Kovacic.
Joey Barton currently holds the record for consecutive yellow cards in the Premier League. During the 2014/15 season, the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder embarked on an impressive streak of seven consecutive games of receiving a yellow card.
In true Barton fashion, he ended this streak by going one further and earning a red card in the eighth match. While technically, he accumulated eight cards in a row, the final card in the sequence was a straight red, effectively concluding his run of yellows.
Following Barton in the yellow card statistics, Cheick Tiote (across 2010/11 and 2011/12) and Ciaran Clark (2010/11) both went on runs of six consecutive yellow cards in the league.
In a more recent instance, Etienne Capoue achieved a similar feat during the 2018/19 campaign. The former Watford midfielder amassed six straight bookings, with five occurring in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup.
He may have just four on the bounce in the league, but Bruno teeters on the brink of matching Barton's record in all competitions.
If he picks up a seventh consecutive yellow card in Newcastle's tie with Fulham, he will undoubtedly carve his name into the history books, but unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.
Nevertheless, there is a silver lining in this situation. Since this potential record-breaking caution takes place outside the domestic league, Bruno will escape a two-game suspension and he could then break the record when the Magpies face Aston Villa in the Premier League three days later.

Mark Hughes (98/99), Olivier Dacourt (98/99), Robbie Savage (01/02), Paul Ince (03/04), Cheick Tiote (10/11), Lee Cattermole (14/15), Jose Holebas (16/17), Etienne Capoue (18/19) and most recently Joao Palhinha (22/23) all currently hold the record for most yellow cards in one season with 14.
With 17 matches still to play, Guimaraes has more than enough time to find himself the six cautions he needs to be the stand alone leader, even with a potential two-game ban looming.
Already, the 26-year-old has defied betting apps' odds by exceeding his season-high of cautions which came last year when he received seven yellow cards in 32 Premier League games.
Even if the Brazilian doesn’t get booked in his FA Cup match against Fulham, attention could turn to the Premier League record as he sits three behind Barton, who was booked seven consecutive times in the 2014/15 Premier League season.
The Magpies travel to the Midlands to face Aston Villa next in the league and it's a reverse contest of the season opener for Eddie Howe’s side.
Unsurprisingly, Guimaraes was booked in that game and we expect to see new betting sites offer even shorter odds than the regular 2/1 he has been for a yellow card in recent weeks when he travels to Villa Park on January 30.
Jackson And Palhinha Close Behind Guimaraes
Despite equalling the record just last season, Palhinha has collected eight yellow cards already this campaign and could be on course to surpass the 14 cautions he received in 2022/23.
Elsewhere, a surprise contender for the most yellow cards comes in the form of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson.
The Senegalese frontman is in his first season in England’s top-flight and has been far from shy, picking up four yellow cards in his first five Premier League appearances.
So much so that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino spoke to the striker about his on-field remonstrations and since then he has slowed slightly, picking up four more cautions in the 14 games that have followed.
But, Jackson has now departed for the majority of January to represent his country at the African Cup of Nations and he could be left behind in the ‘race’ for the bad boy accolade.
It looks a straight shootout between Fulham’s Palhinha and Guimaraes for this season at least, and at their current rate they could both eclipse the record come May.
