Aside from the overall winner of the tournament, the race to finish as top scorer is receiving the most attention.
There are numerous world-class attackers taking part in Europe’s premier competition this term, and each of them will have their eyes on this prize - no matter how often they insist they are only focused on the collective.

Erling Haaland was the leading goal-getter in the Champions League last term with 12 strikes to his name.
Given that Manchester City are the tournament favourites and the regularity with which their centre-forward beats opposition goalkeepers, it is no surprise that Haaland leads the market at 13/10. Perhaps only injury could deny the Norway international.
Harry Kane got closest to Haaland in the battle for the Golden Boot in the Premier League last term, and bookmakers expect him to be the City star’s closest challenger this time around too.
Kane spearheads a Bayern Munich team with plenty of attacking quality. He can be backed at 4/1 to finish at the top of the charts in 2023/24.
Mbappe And Lewandowski Will Be Crucial To Their Teams
After a summer of speculation linking him with a move away, Kylian Mbappe remains a Paris Saint-Germain player.
If this is to be his last campaign at the Parc des Princes (the forward’s contract is due to expire next summer), Mbappe will be keen to go out on a high.
The France international is arguably the best player in the world, and odds of 11/2 show that football betting sites expect him to be there or thereabouts in the race for the top scorer award. However, doubts over PSG’s prospects could harm Mbappe’s cause.
Robert Lewandowski is past his best these days but he remains a world-class finisher. The Barcelona frontman is available at a best price of 10/1 going into match day one.
Ramos And Osimhen Among The Leading Outsiders
PSG head into this Champions League season with a revamped attack following the departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi over the summer.
Mbappe remains, of course, and PSG fans will hope their star man strikes up a good understanding with new centre-forward Goncalo Ramos.
The Portugal international scored 27 goals for Benfica in all competitions last term, including seven in the Champions League.
He is still an outsider at 28/1, however, largely because Mbappe will probably get PSG’s best chances.
Available at 25/1 with William Hill is Victor Osimhen, who fired Napoli to Serie A title glory last season.
The Nigerian certainly knows where the goal is, but it remains to be seen just how well Rudi Garcia’s men do in the Champions League this term.
Vinicus And Alvarez Look Like Interesting Dark Horses
At lengthy odds of 35/1, it could be worth a punt on Vinicius Junior scoring more goals than any other player in the competition.
Although he has been somewhat overshadowed by Jude Bellingham so far this season, Vinicius could be the prime beneficiary of Karim Benzema’s departure.
The Brazilian has shown he can score goals at this level before, and he should get plenty of appearances in the tournament given Real Madrid routinely reach the last four.
It will be tougher for Julian Alvarez, who can be backed at 40/1, to finish as the Champions League’s top scorer.
The Argentine is a brilliant player, but he does not take penalties for Manchester City, where he largely plays second fiddle to Haaland - even when both players are starting.
Jesus And Rashford Have A Lot Of Work To Do
The list of dark horses in this market on betting apps include Gabriel Jesus (40/1) and Marcus Rashford (50/1).
Arsenal are more likely to go further in the Champions League than Manchester Utd, but their main striker is not exactly prolific - Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka or even Martin Odegaard may well be better picks.
Rashford has not got going yet this term, but the bigger question mark is over the club he plays for.
United have been poor in the first few weeks of 2023/24, and at this (admittedly early) stage it is difficult to envisage them reaching the last eight or beyond.
Rashford is certainly a capable forward, but neither of these players look like attractive bets right now.
