PGA Championship History

The PGA Championship is over 100 years old, having been established in 1916. It has been a stroke play tournament since 1958 and we have seen a number of big-priced winners over the past few years. In 2021, Phil Mickelson caused a stir when winning this major at huge odds of 250/1, having been completely unfancied before the competition.

All the golfers in the field are competing for the Wanamaker Trophy, named after businessman and golfer Rodman Wanamaker. No golfer has won the PGA Championship more than five times, with Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen both having five wins to their name, while Nicklaus has also finished runner-up on four occasions.

Mickelson became the oldest player to ever win the PGA Championship at the age of 50 in 2021, while the youngest champion was Gene Sarazen in 1922, at the age of 20. The biggest winning margin of the stroke play era came in 2012, when Rory McIlroy won by eight strokes, while Jason Day’s -20 in 2015 was the best score in relation to par.
