Republican VP Betting Odds: Betting Swings To Scott Over Noem And Haley

Betting sites have pushed Tim Scott into top spot to become Donald Trump’s running mate at the 2024 US election – but Nikki Haley is not out of the battle yet.

Mr Trump has effectively secured the GOP nomination after knocking Ms Haley out of the race on Super Tuesday.

America is braced for Trump vs Biden II this autumn, with president Joe Biden all-but assured the Democratic nomination too.

It means bookmakers are now shifting their focus to who will be on the GOP and Democrat tickets alongside the main names come November.

A string of suitors have tried to catch Mr Trump’s eye during the Republican primaries.

The likes of Vivek Ramaswamy fought against him while flattering the ex-president at the same time. Others, such as Mr Scott, are keeping their options open.

Ms Haley’s decision to withdraw from the race means Mr Trump now has to make a VP pick.

Right now it looks like Scott will get the job ahead of Kristi Noem. Amazingly, a new candidate has joined the shortlist in independent Tulsi Gabbard.

This race still has plenty of road to run and the bookies are figuring out who to champion…

Political betting sites have been running their Republican VP odds for some time now, predicting that whoever courts Mr Trump’s favour the most will get his patronage.

Amazingly, biotech entrepreneur Mr Ramaswamy has attracted the most bets of any candidate so far.

A huge 21.8% of the GOP vice presidential betting activity is backing Mr Ramaswamy for the post.

That reflects his evident eagerness to join forces with Mr Trump during the primaries but also highlights a big decision that the former president has to make.

Yet he looks destined to miss out one the post. Instead, below are the top candidates for the post…

Tim Scott

Sen. Scott suspended his presidential campaign in November and has since championed Mr Trump for the Oval Office. He hasn’t ruled out joining the ex-president on the ticket and Mr Trump himself has offered public support to the idea.

There’s a growing feeling that Mr Trump cannot win the next election with an old, white man as his running mate.

Sen. Scott is one of the most prominent Black Republicans in the U.S. He would also be a sure pick to run for president in 2028, should Mr Trump win a second term.

Analysts reckon Mr Trump has to offer something different to Mike Pence this time around. Sen. Scott is the 5/1 favourite with Coral to win the pick.

Kristi Noem

South Dakota governor Kristi Noem rose to prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic and is well aligned with Mr Trump.

She is a flag bearer for traditional Republican voters, being relaxed on gun control and pro life.

That gives her validity among non-MAGA Republicans who want a reason to back Mr Trump.

Ms Noem says she and Mr Trump “talk all the time” but insists they haven’t discussed the vice presidency. That could well change in the coming weeks.

Her ‘MAGA makeover’ – as the NYT puts it – is an attempt to firm up cross-party support. Mr Trump needs a running mate who can unite the GOP, even if he himself can’t.

At 11/2 Ms Noem is well placed to get the pick.

Tulsi Gabbard

A new contender in the race, Tulsi Gabbard was once a card-carrying Democrat. Now the Hawaiian isn’t just supporting the Republicans but has become a big name following her CPAC appearance.

Ms Gabbard is the sort of quick, confident politician that Mr Trump needs by his side.

She must be ready to match his rhetoric while also offering a carrot to undecided voters who don’t like the MAGA branch of the GOP.

She is also the first American Samoan Congresswoman and the first practicing Hindu member of Congress.

She ticks a lot of boxes with voters and betting apps have her in at 10/1 to win the VP nomination.

Elise Stefanik

Steve Bannon reckons Elise Stefanik is “top of the list” for ex-president Trump. She has loyally campaigned for him all year and is slowly making a name for herself.

The New York politician was mooted as a possible VP pick back in January, after her questioning of three university presidents about antisemitism on campus went viral.

Trump’s allies certainly think she has a spark. Mr Trump himself called her a “killer” recently.

But two New Yorkers on the same bill might not delight voters out in key swing states. At 10/1 she is worth monitoring.

Nikki Haley

At 14/1 many might feel Nikki Haley is priced too high to still be a viable contender here.

However, her withdrawal speech after Super Tuesday called on Mr Trump to “earn” her support. She polled as high as 40% in some states during the primaries.

Ms Haley is not for lying down. If she is to endorse Mr Trump then he will have to give her something in return. That could be the VP spot.

It’s an outside shout but Republicans know they had a better chance of beating Joe Biden in the election with Ms Haley, compared to Mr Trump.

Getting her on board could be the golden ticket. Whether both figures would be able to stomach working with each other, it remains to be seen.

Vivek Ramaswamy

As mentioned above, more bettors are backing Mr Ramaswamy for the VP job than any other candidate. But their bets already look wasted.

Bloomberg reported that Mr Trump personally told Mr Ramaswamy that he won’t be his running mate. Instead, the 38-year-old will probably get a cabinet job.

Bettors originally flocked to him after he acknowledged he would love to join Mr Trump on the ticket.

Mr Ramaswamy even flirted with the former president during his own primary campaign, refusing to criticise the man who rules the Republican Party.

Punters also took advantage of Mr Ramaswamy’s odds. Some bookies have him as short as 7/1 to be the Republican VP pick.

Others place him at 20/1. This discrepancy in the market is good news for bettors who lock in the higher price.

There’s always a chance Mr Ramaswamy’s odds could fall in the next few weeks if Mr Trump changes his mind. In that instance, punters can then hedge against him at lower odds.
