Betting Odds: Who Will Quarterback the New York Jets?

With New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers mending from a season-ending Achilles injury, second-stringer Zach Wilson has been eviscerated, even by Jets legend Broadway Joe Namath.

As Rodgers’ replacement, Wilson went 18-for-36 in that 15-10 loss last weekend to the New England Patriots, with 157 yards and no TDs.

Now the Jets have to host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, with new Chiefs fan Taylor Swift possibly in attendance to cheer on Kansas City star tight end Travis Kelce.

Possible Replacement For Wilson

Several possibilities have been mentioned as a replacement for Wilson.

For one, former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, out of the NFL since 2016, has reached out to Jets, seeking a job.

Meanwhile, the Jets signed veteran free agent Trevor Siemian to their practice squad this week. Siemian played two games with the Chicago Bears last season and six games with the New Orleans Saints in 2021. His big season was with the Denver Broncos in 2016 – 14 games, 59.5% completion percentage, 3,401 yards passing, 18 TDs, and a 49.7 QBR.

Tim Boyle is the Jets’ backup – five games, with 526 yards passing, three TDs, and a 64.9% completion season in his biggest season, 2021 with the Detroit Lions. He hasn’t played in a game so far this season.

Other Possibilities

Among other potential starting quarterbacks, the Jets could sign free agent Carson Wentz, and in Denver coach Sean Payton and quarterback Russell Wilson have been at odds, sparking Mile High trade rumors.

Also, Jameis Winston, the backup to banged-up Derek Carr in New Orleans, is seen by some in the Crescent City as tradable. Winston threw 14 TDs with the Saints in 2021.

Talk shows this week were laying out a scenario where Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans (1-2) gets traded to the Jets – modest salary ($27 million per season) and past history with Jets passing-game coordinator Todd Downing.

For now, the Jets (1-2) think the best way forward is to stand by Wilson and boost his confidence. Jets coach Robert Saleh is taking lots of heat for his support of Wilson.

Oddsmakers aren’t as confident – the Chiefs are 1.25 moneyline favourites at BetMGM Sportsbook, while the Jets are at 4.10.
