16:40 Epsom: Nizam - 0.5pts Each-Way @ 80/1
Nizam only beat one rival home on his stable debut for Ian Williams in the Spring Cup, but he got no run that day and I think the market is underestimating his chances today.
He raced a shade keenly early on and was then tight for room and raced awkwardly after around three furlongs.
He was angled a bit further towards the middle of the track with two furlongs to go, but his path was blocked and he had no chance from that point.
He was then nudged along and angled back to the near side, after which he made a little late headway.
Some of the others who were held up and didn’t get a clear run, have since run well and I think the 3lb drop is a bit on the generous side given that Nizam didn’t get the chance to show his ability.
Prior to joining Ian Williams, he had shown a very good level of ability in France when trained by Mario Baratti, and was thought good enough to contest a Prix Du Jockey Club trial early in his career.
He didn’t quite live up to those expectations and his head carriage under pressure at times might be a clue as to why that didn’t happen, but he continued to run well including over an inadequate trip when fifth in Listed company at Saint Cloud.
It may be that Nizam will be at his best when on a straight track, and the camber of this track will be a new test for him.
However, the ground being on the soft side is in his favour, and I think he can run better than his huge price suggests.
