13:25 Downpatrick: Everyday Life - 0.5pt Win @ 10/1
Everyday Life finished behind Spring Waltz when they met in a maiden point at Lisronagh last season, but I think she has the potential to reverse that form and run well on her rules debut over this shorter trip.
She regularly ran well in points while looking a non-stayer over the three mile trip.
The market strength on debut suggested that she had likely been showing up well in schooling races and, having been handy from the off, she was still in a share of the lead when coming down at two out.
She set a good pace at Lisronagh on her second start and along with Jury Time she opened up an advantage on the rest of the field leaving the back straight.
She was headed going to two out and had little left late on, fading into third behind the more patiently ridden and stronger stayer in Spring Waltz.
Her next run was a bit disappointing, but she bounced back on her final start in the pointing field when she finally got the better of a sustained battle for the lead with After The Ball and left that rival walking home, only to be picked off late on by Found It.
I’m hoping that they will look to repeat the positive tactics used on Everyday Life now that she’s going under rules over this shorter trip and I think the sharper test can bring improvement from her.
The better ground may help her cause too and they’ve found a race that doesn’t look too deep and any 15/2 or bigger appeals.
Rhys' Selection 1: 13:25 Downpatrick: Everyday Life - 0.5pt Win
13:42 Hexham: Zephlyn - 1pt Win @ 16/1
This race is likely to be strongly run and I think that will suit Zephlyn, who drops back in trip having run well at Perth when last seen over hurdles.
He was ridden patiently that day before easing into contention turning the final bend.
Shaken along to make his effort, he was only just over a length behind the leader jumping two out before fading late on, with a mistake at the last not helping his cause.
Zephlyn was up against two unexposed types that day and there doesn’t look to be anything of their quality in this field.
He ran well enough over this sort of trip at Newcastle, when given a very patient ride to think that the drop back in trip will be no issue for him - and the combination of a strong pace and stiff finish over the two miles might end up being an ideal test for him.
It is a bit concerning that he has weakened quite so quickly late on in his last two starts, but I think the market is underestimating his chance and any double-figure prices appeal.
Rhys' Selection 2: 13:42 Hexham: Zephlyn - 1pt Win
16:20 Downpatrick: Anodandawink - 0.5pt Win @ 6/1
Anodandawink makes his chasing debut in this beginners contest and I think he has the potential to improve on what he’s shown so far under rules over hurdles.
He looked a stayer when coming under pressure some way out and staying on well to finish second in a maiden point at Monksgrange, but has mainly been campaigned over 2m4f or shorter during his time under rules.
On the one occasion they did run him over a staying trip at Kilbeggan, he put in his best performance under rules when finishing a close third.
The trip was clearly too sharp for him last time so the return to further today will help his cause, and I think the switch to fences can bring improvement from him too.
I think the smaller field might help him as well as it should allow him to get into a prominent position with less pressure, and he has the potential to take a step forward under these circumstances.
Any 5/1 or bigger appeals.
Rhys' Selection 3: 16:20 Downpatrick: Anodandawink - 0.5pt Win
19:55 Fairyhouse: Bell Ex Too - 0.5pts Each-Way @ 18/1
I expect we will likely see Bell Ex Too back at this track over hurdles later in the year, but I’m hopeful he can make an impact on the flat before then and build on the promise of his first two starts.
He was in a strong contest on debut at the Curragh and ran respectably in the circumstances.
He faced lesser company when stepped up to this trip at Dundalk last time and he still looked quite green that day.
He always looked a little on the back foot and was outpaced when the pace lifted turning into the home straight, but finished off well to take fifth.
I’m expecting this to be run at a more generous pace, which I think will help his cause, and I think this track could be more suitable for Bell Ex Too as well.
It may be that he would ideally want the ground to be a bit softer, but he looks overpriced in a race that may not have much depth in quality and any double-figure prices appeal.
Rhys' Selection 5: 19:55 Fairyhouse: Bell Ex Too - 0.5pts Each-Way
