UK betting sites have installed England captain Harry Kane as the favourite to win a second consecutive World Cup Golden Boot ahead of Sunday's big kick-off.

The Spurs striker took home the award in 2018 after firing in six goals during the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals.

He is now 29 years old, so he should be approaching the peak of his powers coming into the first ever winter World Cup.

Harry Kane Odds: World Cup Top Scorer

Kane is the 7/1 favourite with football betting sites to finish as the top scorer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His main rivals in the betting are France duo Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema, plus Neymar, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Gabriel Jesus.

Much will depend upon how deep England go into the tournament. They were runners-up at the Euros last summer following a penalty shootout defeat to Italy, so they are now making a habit of reaching the latter stages of major tournaments.

Kane will spearhead a dangerous attack, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish supplying him with chances.

He should have lots of opportunities to find the back of the net against Iran, the USA and Wales in the group stage.

The Spurs star also takes penalties for his country, which helps his case in the the top goalscorer market.

One issue is a potential showdown with France in the quarter-finals, but if England were to beat Les Bleus, they would become the favourites with bookies in their World Cup betting offers.

Kane has 51 goals in 75 games for England and he has a great chance of earning another Golden Boot at the world's greatest tournament.

Former Three Lions and Tottenham forward Teddy Sheringham has full faith in Kane's ability to finish up as top scorer at the World Cup and feels an early goal for England in their opener with Iran could set him well on his way.

"Without a doubt, he has a chance to win another Golden Boot," Sheringham told Gambling.com

"He’s a phenomenal talent, has become a real leader and the ultimate professional – he’ll be ready and raring to go and will be focussed right from the word go.

"If England get off to a good start against Iran with an early goal, that will be music to Kane’s ears because it means Iran will have to come out of the traps looking for a reply and that will leave a lot of space in behind their defence.

"Who knows what that will mean for the team and Kane’s chances of getting off the mark early. If England score in the first 10 minutes, it becomes a completely different game to what it would be if you haven’t scored by the hour mark.

"Things change in football very quickly if you can get off to a flying start."

Interestingly, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte admitted last week that Kane was "really, really tired" after bringing him off early during their 2-0 EFL Cup loss to Nottingham Forest.

That has given England fans cause for concern ahead of Qatar and Sheringham is no different, claiming Conte made an error of judgement by starting the England captain that night.

"If it was Conte’s concern that he’s tired then I don’t think he should have played him in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest," said Sheringham, who also played for Forest during a stellar playing career.

"He’s played an awful lot of games and I don’t think he should have played in that particular game, I’d like to have seen a young centre-forward get the nod, whoever that may have been.

"You’ve got to rest your players at the right time and the Carabao Cup would have been the perfect opportunity, especially now with the benefit of hindsight having been knocked out anyway."

At 1/20 to start the opener against Iran, Kane is a certain pick for England manager Gareth Southgate when fit, and with the Three Lions the heavy favourites for three points it's no surprise to see the Tottenham striker dominate the goalscorer betting odds.

He's 5/2 to open the scoring with Boylesports and the shortest-priced player in the hat-trick betting odds at 28/1 with most betting apps

Many punters will fancy the 6/1 price on him to score at least two, but for those looking for greater certainty he's decent value in the anytime goalscorer market at 11/10

Beyond the Iran game, Kane will have greater aspirations and the Golden Boot is not the only individual award handed out to star performers at the World Cup.

The Golden Ball doesn't often get handed out to strikers, but Kane has proven to be fine creator in his own right over the past two years, so it's not beyond reason to see him as a contender at 20/1 with BetVictor

There are other ways to bet on Kane at the World Cup. With England among the favourites to win the tournament and Kane heading up the top scorer odds, you can double up on both outcomes to create an appealing price.

You'll get 25/1 with William Hill on a Kane Top Scorer/England Outright Winner double, the best price across the board.

Not all bettors are seduced by long odds though, some prefer a more cautious approach. For those inclined to bet on an odds-on shout, he looks a solid bet to finish up as England's top scorer at 4/6 with BetVictor
