15:40 Royal Ascot Day 5: Satono Reve - 1pt Win @ 4/1
Satono Reve was narrowly beaten in this race last year and I think he has an excellent chance of going one better this time around.
In the race last year, he raced prominently on the near side and travelled strongly to go into a clear lead on his side with two furlongs to go.
He soon came under stronger pressure as him and Lazzat pulled clear of the rest, but he couldn’t quite get to that rival and was beaten half a length with three lengths back to the rest.
I think being in the smaller group on the near side may have cost Satono Reve victory that day.
He’s had the same prep this year, winning the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and chasing home Ka Ying Rising in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize when Satono Reve was caught wide early.
He’s up against nothing of Ka Ying Rising’s quality in this and he looks to be well drawn towards the near side in stall 18.
Joliestar will be a tough rival if she’s able to repeat the level of her recent efforts in Australia, but I think they should be a bit closer together and any 100/30 or bigger appeals.
Rhys' Selection 1: 15:40 Royal Ascot Day 5: Satono Reve - 1pt Win
16:20 Royal Ascot Day 5: Andab - 0.5pts Each-Way @ 22/1
I’m expecting the Jersey to be quite strongly run and there are a couple of horses who appeal as late closers who have the potential to run well at big prices.
Andab had a tough trip at the Curragh two starts ago, when getting stuck in behind rivals and had to be sharply switched to get a clear run with just under a furlong to go, running on well after to finish second.
The race was run more suitably for him last time at Sandown when they went a strong pace.
He made notable headway in the first half of the home straight, but was no match for subsequent St James’s Palace third Talk Of New York late on.
I think a straight seven furlongs on a stiff track could be ideal for Andab, and the application of a visor for the first time could bring improvement too with Saxon Warrior’s progeny performing better than market expectations when such headgear is fitted.
While there has been some early market support for him, I think he’s still a little overpriced and any 20/1 or bigger appeals.
Rhys' Selection 2: 16:20 Royal Ascot Day 5: Andab - 0.5pts Each-Way
16:20 Royal Ascot Day 5: Take Charge Star - 0.5pts Each-Way @ 80/1
With the track seemingly playing more evenly, stall one might not be quite so much of a negative for Take Charge Star and he has the potential to run better than his price suggests.
He also had a tough trip in the same Listed race at the Curragh that Andab contested, when getting badly tightened up on the far rail and finishing fifth.
They chucked him in at the deep end in the Irish Guineas last time and I thought he ran creditably in the circumstances.
Having been a bit slowly away and racing at the back of the field, he made headway to be behind the leaders with two furlongs to go but was hampered when Distant Storm cut across him.
Take Charge Star couldn’t sustain the effort late on and faded away to finish eighth.
I think the drop back to seven furlongs will be more suitable than a mile for Take Charge Star, and he should have a good pace to be able to settle off with the opportunity to close into that late on.
There is the chance that he’s just not quite up to this standard and he might even end up being a six-furlong horse but I think he’s a little overpriced and any 50/1 or bigger appeals.
Rhys' Selection 3: 16:20 Royal Ascot Day 5: Take Charge Star - 0.5pts Each-Way
