Rhys Williams' Racing Tips: 7 Selections For Wednesday

Horse racing expert Rhys Williams is sharing his best selections for today's racing.

Rhys has been a racing analyst for over 10 years, working for At The Races and most recently as a tipster for Betfair, where his tipping column had a 31% ROI over four and a half years.

He often focuses away from the front end of the market, finding angles that aren't evident to most.

Rhys' tips have returned 323.62 points from 179.5 points staked, meaning his profit and loss record stands at a whopping +144.12pts overall - thanks to a sensational recent spell that included Lamar Canyon's win at 150/1 last week.

Here are Rhys' tips for today, using the most up-to-date odds from the best horse racing betting sites.

15:30 Newton Abbot: Bee's Kiss - 0.5pt Win @ 25/1

Bee’s Kiss is racing from 8lb out of the handicap for her chasing debut and her form figures are uninspiring, but I think she could be capable of running better than her big price suggests in this low-quality handicap chase.

She showed a fair level of ability in Irish points, including finishing one place behind White Noise on debut and a comfortable victory on her fourth start.

She showed some promise on her hurdling debut for Jimmy Frost at Wincanton, where she was part of the leading group turning the final bend before dropping away quickly in the home straight.

Very little was shown on her next three starts over shorter trips and she was then stepped up to three miles for her handicap debut last time.

Having raced handily, James Best tried to win the race early in the back straight for the final time as Bee’s Kiss got into a battle a long way out and she paid for that late on as she faded away after two out.

There’s a positive jockey switch this afternoon with Conor O’Farrell taking over in the saddle and they have found a weak contest for her chasing debut.

Bee’s Kiss has to show that she can jump the slightly bigger fences under rules and that she can stay this far, but I’m hopeful she will be ridden a bit more patiently and any 16/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 1: 15:30 Newton Abbot: Bee's Kiss - 0.5pt Win

17:30 Newton Abbot: Winter Flight - 0.5pts Each-Way @ 28/1

It may be that Matty’s Mate will be too classy for this field, but it’s a bit concerning that he’s appearing at this time of the year as a five-year-old - so I’m going to take him on with a rules newcomer, who I think could be more of a danger than the market suggests.

Winter Flight failed to win in three starts in points for Bradley Gibbs but showed some ability.

He jumped terribly when fourth across the line in the void maiden at Eyton.

There have been mixed signals with that form with Le Roi Remi showing a very good level of ability under rules since while others have disappointed.

Winter Flight’s jumping let him down again next time at Upcott Cross, where he had already made a few mistakes before falling at two out when upsides Sincerely Me.

On his only start of this season, he looked a non-stayer as he dropped away in the closing stages against a smart rival in Six Two Three.

It might be that the fairly heavy fall last season has left its mark as that run at Badbury was a bit disappointing.

So maybe Winter Flight won’t be the horse that his debut promised he could be, but I think the lack of obstacles and sharper test this afternoon could bring out the best from him.

Hopefully he will be ridden to make his experience count against a field of mostly newcomers and any 14/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 2: 17:30 Newton Abbot: Winter Flight - 0.5pts Each-Way

18:45 The Curragh: Tornado Kiss - 0.5pt Win @ 8/1

Tornado Kiss and Fox In Flight finished behind a few of their rivals when last seen at Cork, but I think they were severely disadvantaged by their track position that day and can bounce back accordingly this evening.

Tornado Kiss also got upset in the stalls last time and that likely contributed to her being slowly away and racing at the back of the field.

She was angled out to make her effort nearest the stands rail, but was left behind by those on the far side.

She had run far better on her seasonal debut over the same course and distance, when much better away from the stalls and she briefly looked to be travelling best with around two furlongs to go before Royal Bay Cen took off and left the others behind.

Tornado Kiss shouldn’t be bothered whether the ground softens further or not this evening.

I think she has a good chance of bouncing back and building on the promise of that seasonal debut and any 13/2 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 3: 18:45 The Curragh: Tornado Kiss - 0.5pt Win

18:45 The Curragh: Fox In Flight - 0.5pt Win @ 40/1

Fox In Flight was well held in the same race at Cork last time, having raced second nearest to the stands rail and I think he could fare better than his big price suggests.

He ran to a good level over both five and six furlongs last season, including when third on his final start of the year at Dundalk when up against a few of today’s rivals.

While the best of his form has been on the all weather, the second start of his career at this track suggests he should be fine racing on turf with some cut in the ground.

They have the benefit of having Reese Holohan in the saddle, who I think is better than the average 7lb claimer. Any 22/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 4: 18:45 The Curragh: Fox In Flight - 0.5pt Win

20:25 The Curragh: Jon Riggens - 1pt Each-Way @ 7/1

Jon Riggens has been ridden by a very inexperienced jockey in his last two starts, and I think he’s building up to a victory with Billy Lee now taking over.

He ran promisingly two starts ago over seven furlongs at this track, where he travelled strongly into contention towards the far side and hit the front before a combination of jockey inexperience and stamina reserves running out told in the closing stages.

Enola Pollet was once again in the saddle last time as Jon Riggens was dropped back to six furlongs.

He was given an extremely patient ride and the whole field was still in front of him two furlongs out, before he flew home to finish sixth.

The cheekpieces that he’s worn at various times in his career, including to victory, now go back on and he has far more experienced handling in the saddle.

I think Jon Riggens has the potential to deliver on the promise of his last two runs and any 5/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 5: 20:25 The Curragh: Jon Riggens - 1pt Each-Way

20:25 The Curragh: Lady Mary Heath - 1pt Each-Way @ 10/1

Lady Mary Heath finished ahead of Jon Riggens on her latest start where she was a big eyecatcher.

She was being dropped back to seven furlongs that day and she travelled well in behind the leaders.

She got on to their heels with three furlongs to go, but couldn’t get a clear run until very late on and she finished strongly to take third.

Lady Mary Heath started her career over six furlongs and the way that she travelled that day suggests that she shouldn’t have an issue with the drop back to that trip this evening, particularly if the rain arrives.

This is only the seventh start of her career and she looks like she could have plenty more to offer now that she’s mentally maturing.

Any 6/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 6: 20:25 The Curragh: Lady Mary Heath - 1pt Each-Way

20:30 Warwick: Northern Air - 0.5pt Win @ 14/1

Northern Air was well beaten last time, but that was over fences over a longer trip and I think she has a better chance than the market suggests of bouncing back this evening.

She was held up that day and was still in contention jumping three out before fading away late on to finish fourth.

That was her second start for the yard and she had shown far more on her stable debut over hurdles over a shorter trip at Newton Abbot.

She was also ridden far differently that day, making the running and only being headed on the run-in.

I’m hoping that they will look to revert to such tactics this evening and they have the benefit of having Lucas Murphy in the saddle who is better than the average 7lb claimer.

Any 12/1 or bigger appeals.

Rhys' Selection 7: 20:30 Warwick: Northern Air - 0.5pt Win
