Sheffield Wednesday Vs Luton, Saturday, 3pm

Were it not for Sheffield Wednesday, we would have the pleasure of heading into this weekend's EFL action boasting a five-column winning streak, but in upsetting QPR away from home last Saturday, the Owls have alerted me to what could be the catalyst for a successful wager.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

That's precisely what I intend to do on Saturday afternoon, attempting to cash in on what I believe will be a home win at the expense of ailing Luton.

Wednesday are up to 10th in the Championship and threatening to throw their hat into the play-off ring, steadily gaining ground as others around them, notably Watford, Blackburn and Norwich, falter.

I went into last weekend concerned about the South Yorkshire side's defensive stability - indeed prior to Loftus Road they had conceded 15 goals in just six league games - but they came through that test with a 2-0 victory, limiting Rangers to just two shots on target.

Although they aren't always watertight at the back, Danny Rohl's side love to pour forward and with 42 league goals scored at this stage of the season, only leaders Leeds, well-resourced Middlesbrough and fading Norwich have scored more than them in the Championship.

At home the Owls have been enjoying themselves, scoring 10 times in their last four games in front of their own fans, earning eight points from an available 12, including wins over Stoke and Preston.

Up next come Luton, a side performing a passable audition for possibly the worst relegated Premier League side in memory.

Crash landing into the second tier, the Hatters have been abysmal, and until now a change of manager has done little to calm the turbulence.

New boy Matt Bloomfield must wonder what on earth he has walked into, swapping a League One promotion chase with Wycombe for an almighty relegation scrap with second-from-bottom Luton.

Defeats at Oxford and at home to Millwall have been his baptism, as he tries desperately to steady a ship which is in grave danger of sinking for the second season running.

Luton have managed a grand total of four points in their 14 away league games, a woeful effort from a side which 12 months ago were busy knocking Everton out of the FA Cup at Goodison Park, as well as hitting four goals against both Brighton (4-0) and Newcastle (4-4).

Lumbering attempts to lure Wycombe striker Richard Kone to Kenilworth Road are becoming borderline desperate, the latest bid rumoured to be £7m.

Luton have at least reportedly secured a deal for Exeter forward Millenic Alli, the Irishman who has scored nine league goals in League One this term, having been a non-league player as recently as January 2024.

Time will tell if he can make an immediate impact, but either way Luton are in deep trouble, a situation which will be made worse if Sheffield Wednesday can continue their bright start to 2025.

Given the mess Luton are in, Sheffield Wednesday look a rock-solid recommendation at 23/20 with football betting sites for the home win.

Blackpool Vs Charlton, Saturday 3pm

Where to shop for leg two of this latest EFL double?

We'll make a beeline for the coast and Blackpool's Bloomfield Road, zooming in on a League One encounter in which Charlton are the visitors.

This is 13th against eighth, two teams in good nick, but where the value has to be the home win at 29/20 with betting apps.

Steve Bruce's Seasiders are undeniably a streaky team, hitting form and proving very difficult to beat during two distinct spells this season. Now looks like another of those periods.

They began the season badly, enjoyed a rich vein of form in September, went missing in October and November, but have come roaring back in December and January with a run of performances which have yielded 20 points from an available 33.

Draws against table-toppers such as Birmingham and Wycombe have highlighted their ability to go toe-to-toe with the best in this division, and they go into this one on a roll after successive victories at Lincoln and Exeter.

Furthermore, nine goals in their five games in January have been pleasing, especially as seven individual players contributed to that goal tally.

They beat Charlton fair and square when these two met at The Valley in September, and look the pick to do so again.

Furthermore, Charlton aren't great travellers. This season, the Addicks have already come a cropper at Reading, Stevenage, Bristol Rovers, Exeter, Huddersfield and Rotherham.

Hopefully, we can add Blackpool to that list
