What is theScore Bet?
Launched in 2007, theScore app quickly became a go-to for live sports scores and updates. After the fall of PASPA in 2018, Score Media & Gaming expanded into online betting with the launch of theScore Bet in New Jersey.
By the end of 2021, Penn had purchased theScore app for approximately $2 billion.
theScore Bet operated in several U.S. states, including Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey, until the summer of 2022, when it withdrew from the U.S. to focus solely on Canadian sports betting markets.
Now, Penn Entertainment is bringing theScore Bet back to the United States.
When Did theScore Bet Launch in the U.S.?
ESPN and Penn Entertainment announced that they mutually agreed to terminate their U.S. online sports betting operations, effective December 1. Penn rebranded its online sports betting service to theScore Bet.
theScore Bet returned to the U.S. market by replacing ESPN BET in the jurisdictions in which it holds licenses.

Why Did ESPN BET Shut Down?
In August 2023, Penn Entertainment agreed to a 10-year, $150 million deal to make ESPN its exclusive online sports betting partner in the US. The agreement included a provision that allowed either party to terminate the deal after the third year if specific market share performance thresholds were not met. Since late 2023, ESPN BET has owned just 3% of the market share across the U.S., trailing behind giants like DraftKings and FanDuel.
Penn Entertainment CEO & President Jay Snowden said in a release: “Although we made significant progress in improving our product offering and building a cohesive ecosystem with ESPN, we have mutually and amicably agreed to wind down our collaboration.”
The rebrand to theScore Bet will be the second time in just over two years that Penn will try to break into online U.S. sports betting in a significant way.
What Happens to Your ESPN BET Account?
The ESPN BET brand has been discontinued. All pending bets and PENN Play rewards points were transferred to theScore Bet. Your ESPN BET account information should have remained the same with theScore. The ESPN BET app became theScore Bet app, so you won’t even need to download a new app.
There’s nothing additional that ESPN BET users need to do to transfer their accounts.
