As a homegrown Maryland sportsbook, Crab Sports earns praise for its surprisingly comprehensive menu and intuitive navigation, providing bettors with a clean and accessible wagering experience. Maryland Sports Betting Legislation & Licensing

Maryland legalized sports betting in May 2021. Governor Larry Hogan signed HB 940, paving the way for both retail and online sports wagering. The law listed 17 entities that were already qualified to receive sports betting licenses, including casinos, racetracks, sports stadiums, and other locations. All online sportsbooks must partner with one of these state-qualified entities or an approved small business.

While retail sportsbooks were operational by December 2021, mobile betting faced delays due to a complex regulatory structure.

The state has two central regulatory bodies: the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) and the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC). SWARC, in particular, was established to ensure inclusivity in the sports betting market, especially for women and minority-owned businesses.

Maryland's betting ecosystem serves a broader purpose. Casino proceeds are channeled to support vital community pillars, including the Education Trust Fund, local communities, the state's horse racing industry, and initiatives for minority-owned businesses.

Maryland House Bill 940

This landmark bill was comprehensive in its approach, encompassing both in-person and digital sports betting. It proposed a distribution of up to 40 retail licenses. These were further bifurcated into:

  • Class A Licenses: Tailored for the state's elite establishments, including six casinos, three major sports teams/stadiums, and the renowned Maryland Jockey Club. There's also potential for expansion, with considerations for NBA, NHL, and MLS teams in the pipeline.
  • Class B Licenses: Crafted for businesses with a physical presence in Maryland, this category caters to diverse venues, from the Maryland State Fairgrounds to off-track betting parlors and sizable commercial bingo halls.

In a move that sets Maryland apart, HB 940 also greenlights up to 60 online licenses, the highest allocation across U.S. states. This provision is inclusive, welcoming both retail operators and exclusive online Maryland sportsbooks.

Popular Sports & Teams to Bet on in Maryland

You can place a variety of bets at Maryland sportsbooks. Bet the straight moneyline on sports in Maryland or go big on futures for next year’s Super Bowl.

Outside of Maryland state lines, several local teams in the DMV area attract significant betting attention, including the Wizards, Mystics, Capitals, DC United, and Spirit.

Football

  • NFL Teams: Baltimore Ravens, Washington Commanders
  • Prominent College Football Teams: Maryland Terrapins

The Ravens are one of Maryland’s biggest NFL teams. They play at the M&T Bank Stadium and have recently signed a betting partnership deal with DraftKings. The Ravens entered the NFL in 1996 but have won two Super Bowls since then.

The Commanders play football in Landover at the FedEx Field, where Fanatics Sportsbook provides retail betting, and have made the playoffs a staggering 25 times, most recently in 2020.

Baseball

  • MLB Teams: Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals

The Baltimore Orioles are Maryland’s premier MLB team and were established back in 1894. The O's have a mixed bag of titles, the most recent coming in 2014 when they won the AL East Division.

Despite initially struggling after moving to Washington in 2005, the Nationals have steadily improved since, winning their first MLB World Series title in 2019.

Responsible Gambling in Maryland

In Maryland, the importance of responsible gambling is recognized by Maryland sportsbooks, as well as various organizations' initiatives. The Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling is a notable entity that works towards promoting healthy and informed choices regarding gambling and problem gambling.

Funded by the Maryland Department of Health’s Behavioral Health Administration, the Center focuses on:

  1. Public Awareness: Educating the public about the warning signs of problem gambling and the resources available for help.
  2. Training and Education: Offering training for mental health/behavioral health providers, preventionists, and Maryland organizations to better address and understand gambling-related issues.
  3. Prevention and Support: Providing technical assistance to the behavioral health care system and offering peer recovery support to those affected by problem gambling.
  4. Research and Policy: Engaging in research to understand the extent and impact of problem gambling in the state and influencing public policy to ensure the well-being of Maryland residents.

Gamblers need to be aware of their habits and seek help if they notice signs of problem gambling. Resources like the Help for Sports Betting page provide specific guidance for those involved in sports betting. Always remember, gambling should be a form of entertainment, not a source of financial or emotional distress.
