At the end of the regular season, North Texas dismissed coach Seth Littrell, and Phil Bennett will serve as the interim coach.  

On offense, the Mean Green are led by quarterback Austin Aune who has shown some flashes this year, including a five-passing touchdown performance against Florida International. Still, the season-long stats paint a somewhat different picture.

Aune is completing less than 57% of his passes. He has 32 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, he has 21 turnover-worthy plays. Alongside Aune, he’s had some pretty dependable targets in wide receivers Roderic Burns, Kyaire Shorter, and tight end Var’Keyes Gumms. They all have at least 50 targets, but Shorter leads them in touchdowns with 10. 

Defensively, North Texas has struggled. It ranks 115th in the nation in passing yards allowed per game at 271.7 and also allows nearly 12 yards per completion. 

Against the run, it's 107th in the nation, allowing over 188 yards and nearly 4.7 yards per carry. 

There are no opt-outs for this game. Still, the coaching staff switch solely for this game is monumentally important as massive underdogs.

While there aren’t any opt-outs, Boise State will likely be without wide receiver Stefan Cobbs in this one because of injury.  

Boise State is coming off a bad Mountain West Conference championship loss, falling 28-16 at home to Fresno State. 

Quarterback Taylen Green played atrociously despite some flashes recently with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. He completed less than 45% of his passes for just 175 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. 

While there aren’t any opt-outs for this game, it’s safe to question whether Boise State will go full force here or use this as an opportunity to let some other players play. To end the regular season on such a deflating note shouldn’t be overlooked. 

Green has been solid for the Broncos with Hank Bachmeier leaving town, but he’s only topped 220 passing yards in a game twice. What makes Green even more valuable, though, is his rush ability. He has over 500 yards on the ground and three scores.

Speaking of rushing ability, it’s hard to talk about the Broncos without bringing up running back Goerge Holani. This season he has over 1,100 rushing yards on 214 carries. He averaged 5.3 per tote and had 10 rushing touchdowns. He added 22 catches for 153 yards and three scores as well. 

Unlike North Texas, Boise State is a good defensive team, ranking 24th and fifth against the run and pass, respectively. It has plenty of great players, but linebacker Ezekiel Noa stands out despite playing just 404 snaps this season. He’s played well in run defense and has only allowed eight receptions in coverage across 156 snaps.

There’s an interim coach that could be putting his best foot forward to get the full-time role, and the Broncos may wish they were playing in a higher-tier college football bowl game. The motivation lies with North Texas despite this massive coaching shift.
