How We Test and Rate MLB Betting Sites

We at Gambling.com have decades of combined experience testing and reviewing sports betting sites. After years of analyzing sites and reviewing feedback from real bettors, we’ve seen firsthand what makes or breaks a great betting site. Our goal is to connect you with books that aren’t just safe but offer great odds and a smooth experience from sign-up to payout.

Our team of industry-leading experts experts grades each of the betting sites they review on a scale of one to 10 across 10 different categories that we deem to be most important to sports bettors. To determine these scores, we don’t just sit behind a screen and rate sites—we test them, compare them, and dig into the user experience to see how they stack up.

Our process ensures we only recommend betting sites that meet our high standards.

Promoting responsible gambling is at the heart of what we do. That’s why we only review fully licensed operators and are committed to offering tools and resources that address responsible betting practices.

How to Bet on the MLB

Before placing your first moneyline bet, you must understand MLB odds and sports betting. Fortunately, making a baseball bet at most betting sites is not that challenging. Books make making a single wager, a parlay bet, or live bets easy.

Here are the steps bettors should follow for making wagers on MLB future odds, MLB series odds, MLB player prop odds, and more baseball betting.

  1. Using the list above, identify a few betting sites and compare the MLB odds they offer on different betting lines.
  2. Pick the site with the best odds on the MLB game you want to wager on and sign up. Better yet, register for multiple books so that you can shop around.
  3. Deposit money into your account.
  4. Place your first wager of the season.

Popular Types of MLB Baseball Bets

The most popular types of MLB bets, which you should find at any leading baseball betting site, are:

  • Moneyline: The simplest straight bet on the coupon, usually the one that appears first. There are no handicaps, no catches … just the odds on either side to win the game.
  • Run Line: This is baseball’s version of the point spread. The underdog is given a 1.5-run cushion to level up the odds; you decide whether or not the favorite will win by two runs or more to cover the spread.
  • Over/Under: How many runs will be scored by the two teams combined? Your MLB betting site will put up a number, and you decide whether the total will be higher or lower—and wager accordingly.
  • First 5 Innings: This is similar to half-time betting in basketball and football. You’re betting on which team will be leading after five complete innings. To help you make your pick, check out the starting pitchers’ form and the quality of the hitters in the starting lineups.
  • NRFI / YRFI: Unique to baseball, with this type of bet, you are wagering whether or not a run will be scored in the first inning. If you don’t think a single run will be scored by either team, put your money on a NRFI (which stands for No Run First Inning). Conversely, if you think one team or both will plate a runner in the first inning, your bet would be on a YRFI (Yes Run First Inning). Your bet wins if the score is anything other than 0-0 at the end of the first inning.
  • Parlays: If you want to wager on several selections with a single stake, you can combine them in a parlay, also known as an accumulator or a multi. You can generate a hefty payout this way, but the bet loses if just one pick fails.
  • Live Betting: The best MLB betting sites are also usually some of the best live betting sites. Baseball offers plenty of breaks in play, allowing you to assess the action and how you think the rest of the game will play out. As the game progresses, odds will be updated, and you can make bets accordingly.
  • Futures: As well as betting on today’s games, you can look further ahead and wager on season-long outcomes. These can include division winners, top home run hitters, and, of course, the identity of the World Series champion.

Top MLB Betting Tips & Strategy

With 2,430 regular-season games played every season, there are many chances to bet on baseball from April to early October. The timing of these games can play a huge role in the outcome, as teams with division titles locked up could rest players, and teams in the playoff hunt could face increased pressure.

The "spoiler" factor, in which a team with no stake in the postseason may take pride in eliminating another team's chances, is also something to consider as the season progresses. Teams with no pressure can sometimes outdo teams with loads of pressure, as has been seen quite a few times in MLB history in playoff races.

  1. Do Your Research

    Do Your Research

There is no substitute for looking into the recent form of both teams, their previous meetings, and a host of other factors that might influence the result of a game—and your bet. These can include the weather, injury news, and even the identity of the umpires.

  2. Monitor Early Lines

    Monitor Early Lines

Some MLB betting sites will put their odds up for tomorrow’s game when today’s is still in progress. Based on the form a team is showing today, there might be some value in the early prices for tomorrow’s action.

  3. Beware of Favorites

    Beware of Favorites

Teams that are priced extremely short on the moneyline do not always win. It can be tempting to assume a team will stroll to victory when priced at -250 (1.40 in decimal odds or 2/5 in fractional odds), but that does not always happen. The starting pitcher could not have it that day. Look for value among underdogs instead.

What to Bet on at MLB Betting Sites

It is fascinating to visit the leading MLB betting sites during the season and to compare the various odds available on teams to win that year’s World Series.

Let's look at some of the most popular betting events available at MLB betting apps:

MLB Playoffs

One newer aspect that has led to greater competition is the introduction of the Wild Card series. Rather than having three division winners and the "Wild Card team" with the best remaining record, it was decided that two teams in each league would play a best-of-three playoff series to determine who would participate in the five-game Divisional Round.

Having a 162-game season come down to potentially just two games is both exciting and completely nerve-wracking. It has placed greater emphasis on winning the division, which has helped maintain competitive balance throughout the year.

World Series

It’s encouraging to see so many leading World Series betting offers available several months before the Fall Classic gets underway.

Most MLB betting sites highlighted on this page carry extensive markets on the World Series throughout the season. Check out the latest World Series odds before betting.

How Does the MLB Work?

The MLB, one of the oldest leagues in North America, has grown significantly since its inception in 1903.

There are 30 teams split up into two leagues and six divisions. Each league has 15 teams, and each division has 5. Every team plays 162 games in the regular season before the postseason starts.

How Teams Qualify for MLB Playoffs

Twelve teams make the postseason, six from each league. The three division leaders in each league make the postseason, as do three Wild Card teams from each league.

The Wild Card teams have the most wins other than the division winners, regardless of division. The top two seeds in each league get a bye and can rest during the Wild Card round. The postseason is then whittled down to two teams, one from the American League and one from the National League, who face each other in the World Series.
