Razz Poker

Razz poker is a form of stud poker in which the lowest five-card hand wins. Razz poker follows similar rules to 7-card stud, but the lowball format provides a unique twist. Straights and flushes do not count, but pairs do and must be avoided. Most online poker sites offer the game with a fixed-limit betting format, rather than no-limit. The best online stud poker sites are rated on Gambling.com, based on reliability and overall experience, and are all licensed and regulated.

What is Razz Poker?

Razz poker is the lowball version of 7-card stud. The lowest five-card hand from the seven cards that are dealt to each player wins the hand. Since straights and flushes do no matter, and the ace always plays low, the best possible hand in razz poker is Ace-2-3-4-5.

Instead of blind bets, razz poker is played with antes, followed by fixed-limit betting. The goal is to make the lowest hand possible, so players want to avoid making pairs of any kind. One common strategy in razz poker is to avoid playing any hand with a card higher than eight.

What to Look for in Razz Online Poker Sites

Players want to feel comfortable, know their money is safe, and that the site is properly regulated. All of the sites listed on Gambling.com operate with a full license in the individual state they operate.

Most online razz poker sites allow you to play for free (play-money games) until you feel comfortable with the speed and software. All are a little bit different, so do some research first.

As you do your research, it’s wise to gauge the level of competition on each razz online poker site. As in most other games, skill levels of razz poker online players can vary considerably. Some are just learning the game, others are more experienced. Keep in mind, however, that in free games, some players are likely to play more recklessly than normal since their bankroll is not at stake.

Other considerations in choosing razz online poker sites include customer service, sign-up bonuses and tournament schedules. Most razz online sites offer some sort of bonus or promotion to join, such as matching a portion of your initial deposit. Check out fees, too. Unlike live table games which collect a small percentage of each pot (the rake), online poker sites generally charge a small entry fee to play tournaments, though some occasionally offer free entry.

Hand Values in Razz Poker

Remember that in razz poker, you’re looking at the game upside-down by attempting to make the lowest possible hand instead of the highest. Straights and flushes don’t count and the Ace is considered low, not high.

The best possible hand in razz poker is Ace-2-3-4-5 (also known as the wheel).

The second-best is Ace-2-3-4-6. After that:

A hand with a 5 high beats a hand with a 6 high, which beats a hand with a 7 high and so forth. So, a hand holding 3-4-5-6-7 would beat a hand holding Ace-2-3-4-8.

Rules for Razz Poker Betting

After each player antes and every player is dealt their initial three cards (two face-down, one face-up), the player with the highest value exposed card begins the betting (called the bring-in). King is the highest value card, followed by queen, jack, etc.

If two players have the same high card, the suit of their card breaks the tie. In razz poker, suits from worst to best are in alphabetical order: clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades.

The player who makes the first bet can wager an amount equal to the ante or raise to a designated fixed limit.

After the second exposed card is dealt to each player, the player with the lowest valued cards (best Razz hand) opens the betting. It continues that way until all seven cards are dealt. The seventh card is dealt face down. The best five-card low hand wins the pot.

Remember that under razz rules, there is no dealer button. After the bring-in, the highest showing hand always begins the betting, followed by the player on the left. That means position can change from street to street.

Community cards are not used in razz poker. Players only use the cards that are dealt to them.

Things to Remember in Razz Poker Rules

In addition to playing razz poker online, other offshoots of the game can be found.

Badugi Poker is a draw poker game and is played with four-card hands instead of five. The lowest set of cards with no two cards of the same suit or rank wins the pot.

In London Lowball poker, straights and flushes do count (unlike razz poker). That means the best hand in London Lowball is Ace-2-3-4-6, not all of the same suit.

In 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball, the lowest hand wins the pot, and players can discard any or all of the five cards they are dealt.

How to Play a Hand of Razz Poker

What is the Card Game Razz?

Razz is a poker game similar in rules to 7-card stud, but the lowest hand wins the pot, not the highest. No straights and flushes. Razz poker can be played online or in live games with up to eight players at the table. There are no flop or community cards in razz poker.

What Happens When You’re Out of Cards?

It’s a remote possibility in an eight-player Razz poker game that the deck will be exhausted. If no player folds, it would take more than 52 cards to complete seventh street. If that happens, a single seventh card is dealt face up, which all players would adopt as a community card.

What’s the Best Hand in Razz Poker?

Ace-2-3-4-5, also known as the wheel, is the best hand possible. The best starting hands in razz are three cards that have the potential to make a wheel, such as Ace-2-3 and Ace-2-4.
