Memorial Tournament Betting Tips: 5 Panel Selections From Muirfield Village

The PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village this week for the penultimate Signature Event of the season, the Memorial Tournament for which defending champion Scottie Scheffler is the 14/5 favourite with betting sites.

The world number one was The Panel’s headline tip for the trip to Colonial where he atoned for a second-round 71 with a 64 on Friday to finish in a tie for fourth, although he was never a serious challenger.

Rory McIlroy is missing the tournament for the first time in eight years which means Collin Morikawa (16/1), Justin Thomas (18/1), Xander Schauffele (18/1) and two-time champion Patrick Cantlay (22/1) are viewed as Scheffler’s nearest rivals.

Jack’s Place, as it is affectionately known, is a second-shot course which tests every facet of a player’s game and was extensively renovated in 2020.

A par-72 lay-out measuring 7,569 yards, the fairways are tree-lined, the rough is thick and the multi-layered greens are lightning fast which is what you would expect from a course owned and designed by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus.

Scheffler felt he “played solid golf” for three days at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but The Panel are wary of being bitten again, especially as this week’s field is far superior than the one in Texas, even in the absence of McIlroy.

Two successful tips from three landed in last year’s Memorial, with Sepp Straka taking one of the each-way places at 66/1 and Billy Horschel snaffling a top-20 spot at 13/8.

Hopefully, this week’s selections also hit the target as The Panel pick out three alternative Memorial betting tips to Scheffler, plus the usual first-round leader and top 20 selections.

Memorial Tournament Betting Tips: Matt Fitz The Bill

It’s been just over two years since Matt Fitzpatrick last entered the winner’s circle, a play-off victory over Jordan Spieth at The Heritage which is played at the Nicklaus and Pete Dye-designed Harbour Town Golf Links.

That could be a good omen for the Yorkshireman, who generally plays well at Muirfield, having posted three top 10s in his last five visits.

However, Fitzpatrick heads to Dublin, Ohio, on the back of an encouraging eighth place at the USPGA Championship where a couple of bogeys in his last three holes cost him a runners-up spot.

Three of the last four winners at Muirfield topped the Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green stats, including Scheffler who leads the PGA Tour for that metric this season.

Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, is outside the top 75 for that statistic, but encouragingly he was the 12th best for the year’s second major at Quail Hollow.

It’s been a poor start to the season for Fitzpatrick, who parted company with long-time caddie Billy Foster in March and replaced him with Dan Parratt for the time being.

Parratt was on the bag for the USPGA, so hopefully his influence can once again inspire Fitzpatrick, who is 40/1 with golf betting sites as the first of The Panel’s Memorial Tournament tips.

Memorial Tournament Prediction 1: Matt Fitzpatrick (Each-Way) - 40/1 With Bet365 (Eight Places)

Memorial Tournament Odds: Straka On A Roll

It’s easy to forgive Sepp Straka for missing the cut in his last outing at Quail Hollow, having won his fourth PGA Tour title at the previous week’s Truist Championship.

Victory at the Philadelphia Cricket Club propelled the Austrian into the world’s top 10 and he certainly catches the eye at 35/1 with Bet365 for another success.

Straka is inside the top 10 for SG: Tee-to-Green standings which could be one of the factors that determine this week’s winner and only Scheffler has better SG: Approach numbers this season.

The world number nine ranks high for both ball striking (15th) and SG: Putting (28th), so it appears all areas of his game are in good shape.

Straka has improved year on year in his last four visits to Muirfield (MC-56-16-5) and he was second heading into the final round 12 months ago when he was undone by a closing 76.

His recent victory will help calm his nerves should he be in the mix on Sunday night when another bold bid is expected.

Memorial Tournament Prediction 2: Sepp Straka (Each-Way) - 35/1 With Bet365 (Eight Places)

Memorial Tournament Predictions: Happy Sunday For Bez?

The third leg of this week’s Memorial Tournament tips can be backed at triple-figure prices with betting apps, but The Panel prefer to take the 80/1 with Ladbrokes, which is offering eight places on Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

The South African can be backed at 110/1 with Betfred, but in a quality field like this one, punters would be wise to give themselves a better chance of a return.

Bezuidenhout has made the cut in all four previous appearances at Muirfield, although last year was his best by far; a closing 72 ensuring outright fourth place.

That was an encouraging performance from Bezuidenhout, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but has three DP World Tour titles to his name, two of which came in his native South Africa.

However, he shot four sub-70 rounds at Colonial where his numbers were positive for all of the Strokes Gained metrics, bar Off-the-Tee, as he ended the week in a tie for 16th.

His confidence will be high as he prepares to tackle a course which regularly features in the top 10 most difficult on the PGA Tour and has been made tougher by the changes implemented by Nicklaus.

Bezuidenhout is unlikely to win this week, but deserves to be considered as an each-way prospect.

Memorial Tournament Prediction 3: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (Each-Way) - 80/1 With Ladbrokes

Memorial Tournament Top 20 Tips: Muirfield Changes Suit Kim

Si Woo Kim has to be considered a livewire chance at 33/1 considering his record at Muirfield, but The Panel are playing it safe and picking the South Korean to deliver a sixth successive top 20 at this course.

Kim failed to break into the top 25 in his first five trips to this iconic course, but since the renovation was completed he has not finished outside the top 20 with a run which reads 18-9-13-4-15.

The Panel were denied a 14/5 winner by one shot last week when Lucas Glover missed out on a top 20 at Colonial, but Kim looks a better prospect.

Kim is inside the top 15 in the SG: Tee-to-Green stats this season and he has top-20 finishes in three of his last four tournaments, including eighth at the USPGA.

The Panel would not put anyone off backing Kim at 16/5 for a top 10, but they are taking the 13/10 with Betfred for a top 20 instead as the next of their Memorial betting tips.

Memorial Tournament Prediction 4: Si Woo Kim Top 20 - 13/10 With Betfred

Memorial Tournament First-Round Leaderboard Tips: Matsuyama The Man

Finally, The Panel have picked Hideki Matsuyama in the first-round leader market at 35/1 with Betfred.

The 2021 US Masters champion has twice topped the leaderboard on the opening day of the Memorial Tournament.

Although the last occasion came in 2018, Matsuyama has a very good record at Muirfield where he topped the scrambling stats 12 months ago in finishing eighth.

That was the fifth time in 10 visits the Japanese had posted a top 20 at Muirfield which he also achieved in 2023.

Fast starts have been fairly rare for Matsuyama this season, but he was 11th at the recent Truist Championship and hopefully he can burst out of the blocks once more on a course where he thrives.

Memorial Tournament Prediction 5: Hideki Matsuyama First-Round Leader (Each-Way) - 35/1 With Betfred (Five Places)
