12:43 Naas: Healys Pub - 0.5pts Win @ 50/1
Healys Pub makes his hurdling debut in the opening maiden hurdle at Naas and I think the market is overlooking the potential shown on his debut in a bumper at Punchestown.
He raced fairly handily on the inside from an early stage, but looked quite green at various stages.
Shaken along approaching the home straight, he looked gawky but made headway to be in contention turning in.
However, his inexperience really showed as the pace lifted and seemed clueless under pressure, ending up dropping away to finish seventh.
Given the greenness that he showed that day, I thought it was an encouraging debut from Healys Pub and there is the potential for him to take a step forward if he’s mentally sharpened up for that.
Although he hasn’t had a winner this season, the trainer’s horses have been running much better than usual and regularly outperforming market expectations.
It may be that Healys Pub will still be too green to show his true ability and that this is another step on his education, but I think the market is underestimating him a little and any 25/1 or bigger appeals.
