Kylian Mbappe Can Strike Fear Into Any Defence

France's captain arrives at his third World Cup having already scored 12 goals across his first two tournaments - four in 2018 as a 19-year-old, and eight in 2022 including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina.

Those 12 goals make him France's all-time leading World Cup scorer and, perhaps not surprisingly, he is the pre-tournament favourite for the Golden Boot with betting apps.

His qualifying campaign was characterised by consistency rather than explosiveness - five goals in the group stage - but his individual brilliance more than compensates.

He scored twice in a 4-0 win over Ukraine in November to secure France's qualification, taking him to 56 goals in 95 appearances for Les Bleus, making him France's second all-time top scorer behind only Olivier Giroud.

The concern heading into the tournament is a knee injury that has clouded his fitness. But Mbappe arrives in North America fully fit and firing, no defence will want to face him.

Kane Boasts Previous Form

England's all-time record goalscorer, Harry Kane, has 78 goals in 112 international appearances - a tally that surpasses even the legendary Pele's 77 goals.

Kane was in outstanding form throughout England's perfect qualifying campaign, finding the net in matches against Latvia and Albania to help the Three Lions score 24 goals in eight games.

He has previous World Cup Golden Boot form too - he won the award at Russia 2018 with six goals, making him the only active player in this market with a Golden Boot to his name.

At club level, Kane reached 500 career goals in February 2026 for Bayern Munich

He has scored at five successive major tournaments and despite turning 33 during the group stage, has proven that age shows no sign of dulling his remarkable finishing ability.

Haaland An Unstoppable Force

Erling Haaland produced arguably the greatest single qualifying campaign in European football history, scoring 16 goals in all eight of Norway's matches.

He scored five in an 11-1 demolition of Moldova, a hat-trick against Israel and the decisive brace in a 4-1 win over Italy that sealed Norway's first World Cup appearance since 1998.

His total left the next-closest European qualifier scorer eight goals behind him.

Having scored 55 goals in just 48 international appearances, Haaland is also the fastest player ever to reach 50 international goals, breaking Kane's record by doing so in just 46 games.

Yamal Has Already Rewritten The Record Books

Spain's 18-year-old winger Lamine Yamal has already become one of the most decorated young players in the history of the game, winning the Kopa Trophy in both 2024 and 2025 and finishing runner-up for the Ballon d'Or.

He became Spain's youngest ever goalscorer on the international stage and the youngest player ever to appear in a major tournament final when he helped La Roja win Euro 2024.

His role for Spain is as an attacking winger and creative force rather than a pure striker, which may temper his goal count.

But Spain's path through Group H against Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde offers ample opportunity to pile up the numbers early.

Messi's One Last Dance With History In The Balance

Argentina's all-time record goalscorer, Lionel Messi, has 115 international goals in 196 appearances - and scored eight goals in qualifying to finish as CONMEBOL's top scorer for the first time in his career.

He has 13 World Cup goals across his career, placing him fourth on the all-time list - and needs four more to overtake Miroslav Klose as the all-time record holder.

In March 2026, Messi scored his 900th career goal, only the second man in history to reach that landmark after Cristiano Ronaldo.

With his minutes carefully managed and Argentina's group - facing Austria, Algeria and Jordan - highly favourable, Messi could still threaten the top of this market if he hits form at the right moment.

Vinicius Jr. Can Claim His Place Among Greats

Vinicius Jr. arrives at the 2026 World Cup with a point to prove on the international stage.

His Brazil record of eight goals in 45 caps is modest by his own standards - a reflection of the added responsibility placed on him at international level compared to the freedom he enjoys at Real Madrid.

That said, it was his goal that secured Brazil's World Cup qualification, a composed finish against Paraguay in Carlo Ancelotti's home debut as Selecao coach in June 2025.

Brazil's group draw is favourable and Ancelotti, who knows exactly how to get the best from Vinicius having worked with him at Real Madrid, is in the best position of any coach to unlock his full potential on the biggest stage.

If Vinicius finally translates his club brilliance to a World Cup, the Golden Boot could well be heading his way.

Ronaldo Chasing Immortality

Cristiano Ronaldo's pursuit of history at the 2026 World Cup is one of the tournament's most compelling storylines.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain arrives as the world's all-time leading international goalscorer with a staggering 143 goals in 226 appearances - a record that seems increasingly untouchable.

In qualifying, he scored five goals in Portugal's campaign, including a brace against Hungary in October 2025 that made him the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying history with 41 goals, breaking a tie with Carlos Ruiz and eclipsing Lionel Messi's total of 36.

He has scored at least one goal in each of his five previous World Cups - the only player in history to do so.

Entering the tournament, Ronaldo needs just four more World Cup goals to surpass Miroslav Klose's all-time record of 16.

At 41, he may be playing within himself more than in his prime, but the appetite for records and the ability to deliver in decisive moments remains undiminished.

Oyarzabal Among Best Of The Rest

Mikel Oyarzabal is the standout name in the chasing pack. The Spain striker has been in excellent form and, playing for the tournament favourites, will have no shortage of opportunities to score.

Bukayo Saka and Ousmane Dembele both offer strong each-way appeal as the primary creative outlets for England and France respectively.

Lautaro Martinez partners Lionel Messi in Argentina's attack and his physicality and movement in the box make him a genuine threat, while Romelu Lukaku will lead Belgium's line with his usual power and aggression.

Julian Alvarez has developed into one of the most effective forwards in Europe with Atletico Madrid and cannot be discounted, while Nick Woltemade is the long-shot of the group - though regular starts for Germany would make that price look very generous.
