Is Online Gambling Legal in Missouri?

Online casino gambling is not legal in Missouri. Instead, Missouri residents can play at social casinos, which allow free slot play and table games through social casino websites or Facebook apps. Players are provided free virtual coins and can play for entertainment or prizes, with no real money changing hands. Our top-rated social casinos are listed above.

Online casino gambling for real money with offshore-based sites is never recommended. Offshore sites generally operate with no regulation or consumer protections and may abruptly shut down, causing bettors to lose access to their account funds with no recourse.

When Will Missouri Legalize Online Gambling?

Online casino gambling is not a priority for Missouri lawmakers, who have focused instead on introducing sports betting legislation with an online component.

Missouri’s casino laws are limited to riverboat gambling. At some point, state lawmakers looking for additional revenue sources to address budget deficits may consider online casino gambling legislation, but that doesn’t appear likely anytime soon.

Land-Based Casinos in Missouri

Missouri is home to 13 riverboat casinos. Most are located on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, though the state allows casinos to float on artificial bodies of water. No additional riverboat casinos can join the marketplace unless approved in a statewide referendum.

Will All Casinos in Missouri Offer Online Gambling?

Several of the riverboat casino owners in Missouri already offer online gambling operations in other states. The list includes Boyd Gaming, Caesars Entertainment and Penn National Gaming, each of which could quickly transition to online casino gambling if legalized in Missouri.

Will Online Casino Apps Launch in Missouri?

If and when online gambling becomes law in Missouri, casino and mobile betting apps will play a major role.

Casino apps give bettors the opportunity to place wagers on their smartphone or mobile device from anywhere in the state, 24 hours a day. The apps are multi-functional, available for both Android and iOS operating systems and free to download from your casino operator’s website or the App Store.

Expected Online Casino Games to Launch in Missouri

Online Blackjack: More varieties of blackjack are offered online with lower minimum bets.

Online Poker: Players can choose between cash games, tournament play or Sit and Go formats. Just as in any poker room, No-limit Texas Hold’em is the most popular game.

Lottery: The Missouri Lottery does not offer online sales but does have a players club app that allows players to scan tickets to earn points or rewards.

Online Roulette: Online version uses an electronic random generator to select winning numbers instead of a physical wheel.

Online Slots: Nearly all of the traditional slot titles found at your local casino are available online, along with new games with the latest animation and graphics.

Live Dealer: A live person deals the game from a studio or casino setting, with the action streamed to your computer or mobile device. Players can interact with the dealer and others at the table, adding a social element to the game. Not all online casinos in legal states have live dealer games, so the availability of live casino action may vary in Missouri if the state legalizes online gaming.

How to Deposit and Withdraw from MO Gambling Sites

Online casino operators want to make payment transactions as convenient and hassle-free as possible. The most common payment methods:

Credit/debit cards: Most popular and convenient deposit option, though some banks may reject gambling transactions or charge higher fees. Generally can’t be used for withdrawals.

Play+: A method created for just this purpose, Play+ cards can be funded via credit card or bank account and used to both deposit and withdraw from your casino account.

E-wallets: The most popular are PayPal and Neteller. Set up an account and easily transfer money to and from your online gambling account for minimal fees.

ACH/bank transfer: Digital connection established between bank and online account. Transactions may take longer to process.

Prepaid cards: Available at retailers and often through online casino operator’s website.

PayNearMe: Cash-only deposit option at Missouri 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy or Family Dollar stores in which a barcode scan transfers the funds to your online gambling account.

Check/money order: Not the most timely but still works for deposits and withdrawals.

What Casino Bonuses Will be Available?

Online casino operators offers bonuses as an incentive to sign up new customers and retain existing ones. Typical bonus offers include:

No-deposit welcome bonus: Receive a small bonus just for signing up for an account.

Deposit match: Make an initial deposit and the online casino operator will match that amount up to 100%. Deposit match bonuses generally require that you wager the bonus money a set number of times before it can be redeemed. Always make sure to read the terms and conditions

Free spins: Awarded to slot players to try new or different games.

Free tournament entry: No buy-in required.

Gambling Timeline in Missouri

There are no racetracks in the state, though pari-mutuel betting is allowed at county fairs, and Missouri does have a state-sanctioned lottery. But in most other aspects, Missouri has a long tradition of banning gambling. While there is strong resistance to releasing some of the legislative restrictions on gambling here, the changing climate and progress on online gaming that other states are making could ultimately have some effect on how Missouri proceeds as well.

Missouri Sports Betting

Missouri does not allow sports betting. As a result, state residents continue to cross state lines to wager on sports in Illinois, Iowa and Arkansas.

Lawmakers have introduced sports betting bills for three consecutive years, each time without success. The most recent legislation included mobile and online wagering, but as many as six competing bills contained differences in tax rates, regulation, use of official sports league data, and whether other forms of gambling should be included. Presumably, if Missouri lawmakers want sports betting, those differences can be resolved.

When is Missouri Legalizing Online Sports Betting?

Proponents are hoping that 2021 is the year. They had similar hopes during the 2020 session, but the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the legislative session and created other priorities.

One issue that may determine sports betting’s fate is whether enough state lawmakers will support a standalone sports betting bill. In 2020, a house bill that advanced out of committee combined both sports betting and an expansion of video lottery game terminals at various locations and entertainment districts. Proponents believe a sports betting bill would fare better on its own.

With significant betting dollars continuing to flow to out-of-state sportsbooks, it’s likely that Missouri lawmakers will eventually adopt both in-person and online sports gambling to address state budget shortfalls. Forecasting when is a more difficult call.

Daily Fantasy Sports Betting in Missouri

Missouri was among the earliest states to legalize Daily Fantasy Sports, with Gov. Jay Nixon signing the Missouri Fantasy Sports Consumer Protection Act in 2016. The bill set tax rates, set a minimum participation age of 18 and appointed the Missouri Gaming Commission to regulate.

A half-dozen fantasy sports operators are licensed to accept Missouri accounts, including industry leaders DraftKings and Fanduel.

Horse Betting in Missouri

Pari-mutuel horse racing wagering was legalized in 1984, but the state has no racetracks or off-track betting facilities in which to wager. Instead, Missouri residents travel across the state line to Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Ill., a thoroughbred track 11 miles from St. Louis.

As for online horse racing wagering, only a few advance deposit wagering platforms accept Missouri accounts, most notably TwinSpires.

Expected Online Sportsbooks to Launch in Missouri

With professional sports markets in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri has the potential to be an outstanding sports gambling market. If online sports betting becomes legal, expect nearly all of the industry leaders to attempt to enter the marketplace. Some already own multiple riverboat casinos in the state, including Caesars Entertainment, Penn National Gaming and Boyd Gaming.

What Sports Can I Bet on When Missouri Legalizes Sports Betting?

If Missouri follows the example of other states, wagering will be allowed on all the major pro sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL), other pro sports (golf, tennis, soccer, motorsports, boxing, mixed martial arts, etc.), major college sports and international sports. Missouri lawmakers would determine if betting on games involving Missouri college teams is allowed.
