Gambling in Missouri

As of 2019, you can gamble at any of the many riverboat casinos in Missouri, which are home to a variety of casino games and regulated poker matches. There are no racetracks in the state, but pari-mutuel betting is allowed at county fairs. As with many other locations in the U.S., Missouri does have a lottery which is completely legal and officially supported. The proceeds are used for good causes, and charity bingo and raffles are also permitted here.

But in most other aspects, Missouri has a long tradition of banning gambling. As the timeline below shows, this didn't really start to change until the end of the 20th century. While there is strong resistance to releasing some of the legislative restrictions on gambling here, the changing climate and progress on online gambling that other states are making could ultimately have some effect on how Missouri proceeds as well. A bill has already been introduced for the 2019 legislative session and, spurred by similar actions in many of its neighboring jurisdictions, The Show Me State is a leading candidate to pass a legalization bill as soon as next year.
