2023 Cricket World Cup Preview, Prediction and Odds

The 2023 Cricket World Cup starts on Thursday, October 5 and in anticipation of this festival of cricket taking place, we have previewed the tournament and provided our best outright bets for the event.

The 2023 Cricket World Cup promises intense action and nail-biting encounters, but this edition will notably miss the Caribbean magic, as former champions West Indies failed to qualify.

England, the reigning champions, have returned with a potent mix of experience, including stars from their triumphant 2019 squad, ready to defend their title.

Yet, amidst all the matchups, it's the India vs. Pakistan face-off that stands out. The historical rivals, who haven't met bilaterally since 2013, are set to clash in a game anticipated to draw up to a billion viewers.

Ahead of the tournament, we've looked at the best online betting sites to find the best 2023 Cricket World Cup odds and Cricket World Cup predictions, including BetMGM, Bet365, Fanduel Caesars, and DraftKings.

Latest Odds

Dates And Time

The first match of the ODI World Cup 2023 will be played on Thursday, October 5 and the final will be played on Sunday, November 19. The day matches will start at 10:30 AM IST while the day-night matches will start at 2 PM IST.

Teams And Format

The competition will adopt the same structure as the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The participating teams – India, England, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Netherlands – will compete in a single round-robin format.

Each team will face every other team once. After this phase, the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals. As per ICC guidelines, the team finishing first in the round robin will compete in the semi-final against the team that finishes fourth.

Points Required To Reach Semi Finals

Securing seven victories out of nine matches will almost certainly assure a team a spot in the semi-finals. In cases where teams have equal points, the number of total wins will be the first tie-breaker. If still tied, the net run rate will be used as the subsequent deciding factor.

2023 Cricket World Cup: India Favorites on Home Soil

India

Tournament Odds: India to win the World Cup (+185) at BetMGM

Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav

Possible XI: Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Rahul, Yadav, Hardik, Jadeja, Kuldeep, Shami, Bumrah, Siraj

Though India hasn't clinched a limited overs title since the 2013 Champions Trophy, they're once again tipped as World Cup favorites when it comes to the 2023 Cricket World Cup odds.

Playing on home turf and familiarity with conditions offer an edge, but the true test lies in their middle order.

After the top order crumbled against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semifinal, India's focus shifted to fortifying their No. 4 and No. 5 hitters. But can they perform under intense pressure?

This squad boasts both talent and determination to seize victory, yet one off-game in a knockout round can spell disaster. India is poised to reach the semifinals with relative ease, solidifying their contender status.

Over the past two years, India has secured victories in 78% of their home matches. When you factor in that they only need a 66% win rate to reach the semi-finals, their momentum is hard to halt.

They've recently addressed their lineup concerns, especially at No. 4, and have added firepower with Suryakumar Yadav as an additional death hitter.

When it comes to spin bowling, pace, and overall team depth, India stands out as superior to other teams, so no dount they top our Cricket World Cup predictions.

2023 Cricket World Cup: England Masters of One Day Cricket

England

Tournament Odds: England to win the World Cup (+330) at Fanduel

Squad: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Possible XI: Bairstow, Malan, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Livingstone, Moeen, S Curran, Rashid, Wood, Topley

Currently holding the T20 and one-day World Cup titles, England has become a force in limited overs cricket and are second favorites with 2023 Cricket World Cup odds of  +330 going into the tournament.

This team brims with talent, and the return of Ben Stokes from retirement further bolsters their bid to defend the 2019 title.

While their bowling unit might not be the most lethal in terms of wicket-taking, they excel in maintaining impressive economy rates and adhering to strategies.

To conquer this side, opponents may find themselves pursuing mammoth totals.

However, an abundance of choices might be England's Achilles' heel. With a plethora of top-tier batsmen, there's a risk of frequently shuffling the lineup during the group stage, preventing them from settling on a stable XI.

Such inconsistency could advance them to the semifinals but might also set the stage for a disappointing performance when it matters most.

The current champions aren't quite the dominant team they were in 2019 when their performance made it clear they were a class apart.

Despite that distinction, they still faced three defeats and clinched the title due to a technical detail. Matching their 2019 strength seems challenging.

Back then, their win rate over two years stood at 74%. Lately, their prowess in chasing scores seems diminished, and their fielding has become costlier.

The absence of Jofra Archer is notable. While Mark Wood remains crucial, he's only seen action twice in the past two years.

2023 Cricket World Cup: Never Write Off Australia

Australia

Tournament Odds: Australia to win the World Cup (+390) at Bet365

Squad: Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Sean Abbott, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc.

Possible XI: Warner, M Marsh, Smith, Labuschagne, Carey, Maxwell, Green, Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Zampa

Australia enters the World Cup following a challenging one-day series against India, though they managed to secure a concluding victory.

Their series with South Africa saw an early lead crumble with three consecutive losses. While remnants of the squad that triumphed in the 2015 World Cup show signs of wear, Australia often brings their A-game to this tournament.

Key players like Steven Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc have the ability to dominate any game so no wonder they are still mentioned when it comes to the latest Cricket World Cup predictions.

The batting prowess of Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Marsh is undeniable. Cameron Green is emerging as a talented all-rounder, while Marnus Labuschagne, joining due to an injury, is a budding middle-order dynamo.

Australia's unmatched confidence is their key asset. Few teams would want to face them in the semi-finals, especially after their series victory in India earlier this year and the recent 2-1 series win and at +390 prior to the tournament could be a great bet.

Yet, there are notable concerns: their performance in death bowling and susceptibility to collapses. The replacement of the injured Ashton Agar with Marnus Labuschagne reduces their spin options.

2023 Cricket World Cup: Pakistan Can Cause a Surprise

Pakistan

Tournament Odds: Pakistan to win the World Cup (+650) at Bet365

Squad: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim

Possible XI: Fakhar, Imam, Babar, Rizwan, Salman, Iftikhar, Shadab, Nawaz, Wasim, Afridi, Rauf

Pakistan fans will no doubt point to a lack of consistency has hindered the team from securing a trophy in recent years.

While stars like Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi consistently deliver strong performances, other contributors haven't stepped up in high-pressure games since the 2017 Champions Trophy.

For Pakistan to reach the semifinals, players like Imam ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Rizwan must deliver standout performances throughout the tournament while to win the tournament outright, their 2023 Cricket World Cup odds are +650

The absence of Naseem Shah significantly impacts their bowling lineup, and the reliability of Pakistan’s middle order is often in question.

This tournament is pivotal for Azam, who, despite being celebrated as one of the world's top batters, has remained in the shadows of the "Fab Four" – Virat Kohli, Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson.

The untimely loss of Naseem Shah just before the tournament disrupts their usual strategy, potentially leading them to lean more on an additional spinner.

While they possess ample determination, courage, and skill, lingering concerns about their middle-order's performance against top-tier teams in crucial matches might be their undoing.

Also, facing the collective sentiments of India is a significant factor that cannot be overlooked.

2023 Cricket World Cup: New Zealand's Black Caps Can Be Dark Horses

New Zealand

Tournament Odds: New Zealand to win the World Cup (+850) at Bet365

Squad: Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young.

Possible XI: Conway, Young, Williamson, Mitchell, Latham, Phillips, Ravindra, Santner, Southee, Boult, Henry

This may be the final shot for New Zealand's "golden generation" to clinch a World Cup. They've been on the brink of victory three times, with the 2019 final standing out as one of the most heart-wrenching moments in cricket history.

While Williamson is back post an IPL injury, he can't do it alone. Conway, Young, and Phillips, once seen as promising talents, now bring veteran experience. Their performance will be crucial.

With a formidable pace attack spearheaded by Boult, Southee, and Ferguson, the question remains: does this team still possess the spark for another deep run?

While there might be perceived weaknesses in the Kiwi lineup, they've consistently found ways to address them. Their track record speaks volumes: second place in 2019 and 2015, followed by two consecutive semi-final finishes.

There might be concerns about their top five batters' pace in an aggressive batting tournament. And the 40% win rate in Asia over the last four years does raise eyebrows.

However, when it comes to performing in significant tournaments, their expertise is undeniable so 2023 Cricket World Cup odds of +850 can't be ignored.
