With live streaming for every NHL game, BetMGM might be the destination of choice for bettors on the go or fans of live betting. Streams are decently high quality, with less lag than you might expect from the somewhat slow-loading app. You’ll get a wide range of live betting markets to go with the streaming service, and bets are almost always accepted and processed before markets can change or lock (provided you don’t have your bet slip open for an extended period).

BetMGM has a solid (but not spectacular) range of betting options and prop bets for every game on the NHL schedule. There aren’t as many niche markets and specific wagers broken down by period as there are for some other books, but the offering should provide most bettors with the variety they want. Parlay and SGP options are certainly up to par.

The main area for improvement is app functionality. As far as the mainstream sports betting apps go, it has the longest loading times as you move around betting markets, with frequent lag or crashes sending you back to the login screen.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Extensive live steaming for NHL games
  • NHL markets provide wide variety
  • Solid parlay options and odds selections
Cons
  • Relatively slow loading times in the app

2. Caesars Sportsbook (10/10)

  • Our Overall Gambling.com Score: 7.1/10
  • Best NHL Betting Features: Competitive Odds
  • NHL Partnerships: Official Sports Betting Partner of the NHL, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals
  • NHL Live Streaming: N/A
  • Welcome Offer: Caesars Sportsbook Promo

Caesars Sportsbook is at or near the top of the industry in terms of NHL betting options, particularly prop bets. The range of markets and by-period prop wagers rivals the variety of any other book. Combining bets into parlays and same-game parlays is very quick and easy, given a clean, user-friendly interface.

Caesars stands out for consistently competitive odds. It often offers the most bettor-friendly line available for a given pick, game, or bet type, making it a popular destination for line shoppers and savvy bettors.

Puckheads will frequently find day-of odds boosts and promos for the NHL, including pre-packaged SGPs or multiplier tokens you can apply to a bet of your choice.

The live betting options and game tracking features on Caesars are similar to what you’ll find on other books, but we will note that data and odds all update quickly and consistently, so you can put in bets exactly when you want. Live bets process immediately, so you rarely run into situations where a selected bet becomes unavailable.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Range of NHL markets & prop bets
  • Consistently competitive odds
  • Frequent NHL odds boosts & promos
  • Pre-packaged NHL same-game parlays available
  • Bets processed quickly
Cons
  • Live betting & game tracking don't stand out from competitors

As one of the leading operators in the country, it’s no surprise that FanDuel has a wide range of betting options for NHL games. Zeroing in a little further, the variety of prop bets for each game is incredible.

All the standard props are available for bettors, from goals/assists/points and saves to BTTS (both teams to score) and the increasingly popular first-ten-minute bets. But FanDuel Sportsbook goes far beyond that. Some (but not nearly all) prop markets include the first and last team to score, lines and totals for each period, the highest scoring period for each team, first five-minute bets, and even player shots broken down by period.

The layout and interface for standard and live bets are very intuitive and easy to navigate. Game tracking and stats are just a click or tap away.

The live streaming is fairly high-quality, one of the major perks of FanDuel's NHL partnership. Payouts on props that hit are almost instant, and you often won’t even need to wait for a game to conclude before the money hits your account.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Incredible variety of prop bets for NHL games
  • Easy-to-navigate, intuitive layout
  • Quick payouts
  • High-quality live streaming & live betting
Cons
  • No loyalty program for sports betting

4. bet365 Sportsbook (9.75/10)

  • Best NHL Betting Features: Live Betting
  • NHL Partnerships: N/A
  • NHL Live Streaming: Select Games
  • Welcome Offer: bet365 Sportsbook Bonus

bet365 really stands out for its NHL promos and bonuses. Beyond the novel approach to the welcome bonus, allowing players to choose which of the offers above they’d prefer, the book has a lot of sport-specific events and deals. For hockey, this includes “early win” promos, where moneyline bets can cash if your team goes up by two goals at any point.

There’s plenty of variety in terms of betting options for the NHL, with moneylines, totals, futures, and prop bets all on the menu. Every major bet type is available, usually with competitive odds, for just about every game on the schedule.

The live betting options for the NHL are an area where bet365 shines. The book makes it very easy to access real-time stats from every game, and the dynamic live odds for team props, player props, and game outcomes update quickly and seamlessly. You’ll very rarely run into the issue of betting options being “frozen” right as you try to place a wager.

You can even live-stream select games with fairly high quality. You shouldn’t go into it expecting any particular game to be available via this service, however.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Selection of NHL promos, including welcome offers
  • Competitive odds on a variety of bet types
  • Live betting tools that respond quickly
Cons
  • You don't get much control over which games you can stream
  • No loyalty rewards program available

5. DraftKings Sportsbook (9.5/10)

  • Best NHL Betting Features: Frequent Promos & Offers
  • NHL Partnerships: Official Sports Betting & DFS Partner of the NHL, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers
  • NHL Live Streaming: N/A
  • Welcome Offer: DraftKings Sportsbook Promo

The functionality, navigation, and layout of the DraftKings app go to great lengths to make it stand out from the pack—and it’s extremely easy to find and place the NHL bets you want. Building parlays and same-game parlays is also very simple, with your odds recalculating immediately for each leg you add or subtract.

During the season, there’s almost always some kind of promotion available that’s geared towards hockey bettors. Sometimes, it’s an SGP boost for Hockey Night in Canada, while you’ll also get GIFT (Goal in First Ten Minutes) and Goalscorer boosts that you can apply to any game or player. These aren’t just token extras; they’re often good for a 33% or 50% lift in your payout. (There are even boosts where you can add +100 to a given player prop, giving you a bonus of 75% or more!)

While NHL games don’t have live streaming, the live betting options are robust. The live game tracking feature and odds update quickly and seamlessly, allowing you to place bets exactly when you want.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • App stands out for its easy navigation
  • Responsive parlay builder tools
  • Frequent NHL promos
  • Robust live betting features, including game tracking and quick-updating odds
Cons
  • No live streaming available for NHL games

6. Fanatics Sportsbook (9.25/10)

  • Our Overall Gambling.com Score: 8.15/10
  • Best NHL Betting Features: Parlay Builder
  • NHL Partnerships: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets
  • NHL Live Streaming: Select Games
  • Welcome Offer: Fanatics Sportsbook Promo

Fanatics is the official outfitter of on-ice uniforms and jerseys for the NHL; Fanatics Sportsbook also offers a wide range of NHL betting options for each game played. What stands out is how instantaneous and easy it is to combine picks across games or from the same game. You can use the “Parlay Builder” section within each game or combine picks as you go along. Everything will automatically be added to your bet slip, with the odds calculated for every pick you add or subtract.

As with other sports, Fanatics is somewhat limited in the overall range of betting markets offered, particularly when it comes to alternate puck lines, totals, and prop bets. Keep this in mind if you like to build very large parlays with very short odds for each leg.

The layout and navigation for the Fanatics Sportsbook are excellent, and it’s very easy to get to the game or specific market you want. Betslips are easy to edit and presented in a clear, easy-to-understand format.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Responsive parlay builder tools
  • Easy-to-navigate layout on mobile
  • FanCash rewards can be put towards Fanatics-outfitted NHL jerseys
Cons
  • Limited range of NHL bet types

7. BetRivers Sportsbook (9.25/10)

  • Best NHL Betting Features: Range of Betting Options
  • NHL Partnerships: Pittsburgh Penguins
  • NHL Live Streaming: N/A
  • Welcome Offer: BetRivers Sportsbook Promo

Right off the bat, BetRivers Sportsbook has a very intuitive design and menu system, which makes navigating in and out of specific NHL games and betting markets quick and easy.

And as far as those betting options go, there is a full suite of moneylines, totals, prop bets, futures, and pre-packaged SGPs offered for just about every game on the schedule.

Many of the spotlighted parlays and prop bets will accompany a relevant stat or bit of information. BetRivers generally emphasizes making data and betting trends readily available to bettors. A range of player and team stats, along with information about how users are betting, are always just a couple of clicks or taps away.

As far as existing player promos go, the NHL certainly gets a fair shake, with about the same frequency and value that other sports have for odds boosts, bet insurance, and bet-and-get offers.

Live streaming or more robust in-game tracking would be welcomed, but those aren’t make-or-break omissions by any stretch.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Intuitive, easy-to-navigate betting menu
  • Plenty of NHL bet types available
  • Makes data & trends easily available to bettors
Cons
  • No live streaming available
  • More robust live game tracking would help

How Does the NHL Work?

With 31 teams in the league, 24 of which reside in the United States and seven in Canada, each team will play 82 games in a season.

The NHL is divided into two conferences: the Eastern and Western. The conferences are divided into Atlantic and Metropolitan in the Eastern Conference and Pacific and Central in the Western Conference.

During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, teams compete against other teams within their division, then move on to the next round to compete for their division title. Once the division titles are awarded to the winning teams, the four teams move on to compete in the conference finals.

The two teams left standing after the conference finals will head to the Stanley Cup Finals.

How to Bet on the NHL & Read NHL Odds

The first thing you’ll want to do when learning how to bet on the NHL is to learn how the NHL odds work.

Betting on the NHL is easy, and the odds aren’t too complicated to understand, but we want to help you understand how to bet on the NHL.

When you hear us or your favorite sportscaster talking about the NHL odds, we refer to the numbers next to the team that reflect how likely a team is to win a game. Or, in the case of specials or totals, how likely is it that a particular occurrence will happen?

In the case of American odds, your NHL odds will be framed as a positive or negative number. Here's an example:

These odds will reflect how much you would win on a $100 wager or how much you would have to bet to win $100. The plus sign indicates an underdog; the number is the amount you would win on a $100 bet. The negative sign reflects a favorite; the number is the amount you would have to bet to profit $100.

The more likely a team is to experience a specific outcome, the shorter its odds will be.

NHL Bet Types

Now that you know how the odds work and how to determine your potential winnings based on the NHL odds, we can go over the basic betting types to prepare you for betting on the NHL.

  • Moneyline: Moneyline betting is by far the most popular NHL bet you can place, as it’s the most straightforward and simple to understand. You might even make pseudo-moneyline wagers with friends in your spare time. All you have to do is choose which team you believe will win the game. Just pick team one or team two—it’s that simple.
  • Puckline: If you bet on other sports, you know point spread betting; this is exactly the same thing. Puckline wagers are usually common bets when teams playing one another are heavily lopsided. This method of ice hockey betting gives the favored team a head start before the game begins.
  • Totals: Betting on NHL totals is a good method if you aren’t familiar with who's playing because it doesn’t force you to choose a particular scoring differential or pick a team to win. The sportsbook will set a line based on their statistical analysis, and you will have to decide if both teams collectively will score more or less than that number of goals.
  • Grand Salami: This is a totals bet on the overall amount of goals scored across every game played on a given day.
  • Futures: This is a fun way to get in on the action early and set up your ice hockey betting strategy to help you make predictions for the upcoming season. You can bet on NHL conference futures, NHL divisional futures, or NHL Stanley Cup futures anytime throughout the season. The odds will fluctuate and change as the season progresses, but if you get your bet early, you lock in those odds.
  • Prop Bets: Prop bets are unique instances that might occur in a game. They are usually framed as yes or no questions or over/under on specific totals like the total number of goals by a player or total penalty minutes for a team or player. Examples of game and team props include both teams to score, first/last to score, overtime (yes/no), team to win all three periods, and team to win with a shutout.

Responsible Gambling with NHL Betting Sites

Above all, responsible gambling is the most crucial part of betting on the NHL. Sports betting is always meant to be a source of entertainment and never a source of income.

The National Hockey League, along with the NBA and MLB, has launched the "Never Know What's Next" campaign to encourage responsible sports betting. Because you never know what could happen next in a live game, it's important to set betting limits and stick to them beforehand. Betting can get beyond your control quickly if you're not thoughtful about your spending and playing habits.

BetMGM, one of our recommended NHL betting sites, launched a PSA with 2023-24 NHL MVP Connor McDavid encouraging bettors to be responsible. Across NHL sportsbooks, there are several tools you can use to stay on top of your betting habits, including:

  • Player statements that show you lifetime money and time spent
  • Single-bet and depositing limits
  • Limiting time spent on betting websites or apps
  • Self-exclusion lists, which will prevent you from placing bets

If you feel that your gambling is getting out of control, you can call 1-800-GAMBLER, text 800GAM, or chat online with a professional; all are available 24/7, 365 days a year. You can get directed to resources such as signs of problem gambling, local support, treatment options, counseling, and more.
