Vermont became the final New England state to legalize sports betting when Gov.  Scott signed HB 127 on June 14, 2023. Vermont bettors can now start betting with the available operators in Vermont. HB 127 allows between two and six online sportsbooks to go live, so fans have some options on where to bet.

Vermont bettors had to wait for a long time for the day that Vermont legalizes sports betting. Vermont lawmakers reviewed proposed bills in 2019 and 2021, but HB 494 and SB 77 gained no momentum. Subtle changes were made in 2023, and the proposed Vermont sports betting laws were approved this time.

HB 127 legalizes online sportsbooks but prohibits sports betting in retail locations. Vermont sports betting sites must pay 20% taxes on revenue as well as a $550,000 fee payable every three years.

Is Sports Betting Legal in VT?

Gov. Scott made sports betting legal in Vermont when he signed HB 127 in June 2023. Vermont sports betting is now available, with the market launched in January 11, 2024. Is Vermont Daily Fantasy Sports Betting legal?

Vermont was one of the first US states to legalize Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) formally. A bill was passed in 2017 as then-Attorney General William Sorrell declared DFS to be in contravention of Vermont gambling laws. New legislation was drafted to allow DraftKings, FanDuel, and others to operate legally in the Green Mountain State.

When is Vermont Online Sports Betting expected to launch?

Sports betting in VT launched in January 2024. An application process is ongoing to determine which online sports betting sites will be awarded a Vermont sports betting license. 3 operators were already given the green light with two already gone live.  Vermont online casinos are also not available.

Will Vermont Betting Apps become legal?

Yes. In fact, betting apps is the only way to bet on sports in Vermont. Retail sportsbooks have not been legalized as it was determined that the state did not have the infrastructure available to support in-person betting. Mobile sports betting will also be available through mobile browser sites.

Which Sports will be legal to bet on at a Vermont Sportsbook?

Which Sports will be illegal to bet on? 

Betting on Vermont college sports teams is illegal unless the team is competing in a post-season tournament. As with the rest of the US, betting on high school games is illegal. Bets on non-sporting events such as politics and award ceremonies are also prohibited.
