BetRivers Sportsbook offers one of the most comprehensive betting experiences, featuring deep markets, competitive odds, robust live betting tools, and an excellent iRush Rewards program. However, its dated design, inconsistent app performance, and occasional withdrawal complaints hold it back from ranking higher on our list.

With frequent promos and robust customer support, it remains a dependable choice for serious bettors who value options and loyalty perks over aesthetics.

Our rigorous review process ensures that we recommend only the best Michigan sportsbooks, focusing on key criteria such as reputation, mobile app usability, exclusive promotions, competitive odds, diverse betting options, varied banking methods, live streaming quality, and adherence to the Michigan Gaming Control Board's safety standards.

We go through the sign-up process with every available Michigan sportsbook, deposit real money, claim sportsbook promos, place bets after analyzing the markets, test customer service, compare Michigan betting apps vs. desktop experiences, and withdraw winnings.

We average multiple experts' grades across 10 different categories to obtain an overall score out of 10, which is displayed above.

Michigan Sports Betting Laws & Legislation

Michigan legalized sports betting in December 2019 when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Sports Betting Act. Retail sportsbooks opened in Michigan in 2020, and the first online Michigan sportsbooks launched in January 2021.

You must be over 21 to place a sports bet in Michigan. This applies to both in-person and online betting.

The Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act of 1996 established the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) and granted it the authority to license, regulate, and control casino operations. The Sports Betting Act expanded the MGCB's purview to include Michigan sports betting sites and Michigan online casinos.

The MGCB also maintains local offices inside Detroit's three licensed casinos: the MGM Grand, MotorCity Detroit, and the Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

Michigan Sports Betting Licenses

To be licensed in Michigan, sportsbooks must partner with a land-based casino in the state. The number of licensed sportsbooks in Michigan can go as high as 15. Michigan supplier licenses are non-transferable; they are only issued after a provider has applied and been deemed trustworthy by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The MGCB does not regulate Native American casinos in Michigan; they're overseen by their individual tribal governments and the National Indian Gaming Commission.

The state's 12 federally recognized tribes were each issued a master license, and each of the three commercial casinos in Detroit (MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown) also received a master license. Each master licensee is permitted to operate one online sportsbook and one online casino.

Under Michigan law, each operator is required to pay $100,000 for its license. There is also an initial application fee of $50,000 and a yearly operating fee of $50,000.

Popular Sports & Teams to Bet on in Michigan

Michigan sports betting tends to skew toward games with local interest. You can bet on all of the major U.S. professional sports, such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB games, and on sports from around the world.

Regular league games generate significant betting action and are the flagship events in the most popular sports, earning the most revenue.

Compared to other surrounding states, college betting rules are relaxed. You may bet on any college sports event where all participating players are at least 18 years old. Use our guides of the college football betting sites and college basketball betting sites to find your favorites.

It's important to note that betting on high school sports is prohibited in Michigan.

Football

  • NFL Teams: Detroit Lions
  • Prominent College Football Teams: Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Central Michigan Chippewas, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Western Michigan Broncos

The Detroit Lions are Michigan's hometown NFL team. They play at Ford Field, located in downtown Detroit. Despite being one of the few NFL franchises never to win a Super Bowl, the Lions have a devoted fan base.

It follows that NFL betting sites in Michigan have lots of markets and features for the Lions, as well as the rest of the league.

College football is extremely popular in Michigan, thanks to the 2023 national champion Michigan Wolverines and other long-standing college programs.

Basketball

  • NBA Teams: Detroit Pistons
  • Prominent College Basketball Teams: Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Detroit Mercy Titans

The three-time NBA champion Detroit Pistons play at Little Caesars Arena in midtown Detroit. Although they struggled in the last few years, the Pistons dominated the NBA in the late 1980s and early 2000s, winning the NBA Finals in 1989, 1990, and 2004.

NBA betting sites in Michigan feature local promos for the Pistons and lots of betting features on the entire league.

Baseball

  • MLB Teams: Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are one of the most historic teams in baseball: They've played in the same city with the same name since 1901, the longest such team in the American League. As such, the Tigers' blue, white, and orange run deep in Detroit.

The Tigers finished the 2024 MLB season just a few games shy of the ALCS, and MLB betting sites in Michigan turned lots of attention on Detroit.

Hockey

  • NHL Teams: Detroit Red Wings

Founded in 1926, the Detroit Red Wings are one of the six founding franchises in the National Hockey League. They have 11 Stanley Cup wins all-time, which ranks them third among NHL franchises. Given their history and success, the Wings have many diehard fans in Detroit.

You can find lots of betting odds and futures at NHL betting sites in Michigan, as well as specials and promos.

NASCAR

  • Racetracks: Michigan International Speedway

Michigan is home to one major NASCAR racetrack, the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI—roughly 80 miles from the Motor City. The MIS hosts the FireKeepers Casino 400 every year in August.

NASCAR betting sites get particularly jazzed for this race, given its proximity to several major car manufacturers.

Golf

  • PGA Golf Courses: Detroit Golf Club

Michigan is also home to the Detroit Golf Club, which has hosted the Rocket Mortgage Classic since 2019. Past winners have included Bryson DeChambeau and Rickie Fowler.

You can use golf betting sites in Michigan to bet on your favorite tournaments, courses, or players.

Staying Safe while Sports Betting in Michigan

Use State-Licensed Michigan Sportsbooks

Michigan-licensed online sports betting operators are superior to offshore operators in every respect. Why take the risk when you can now bet legally in Michigan?

You'll be impressed with what's now available in Michigan. Legal sites access official sports data in near real-time. This means they can offer a sports betting experience that is many times better than anything available offshore. Offshore books cannot obtain official data, so they cannot compete with Michigan's licensed sports betting operators.

Legal sites provide a secure environment for wagering on sports. Your funds are safe, not routed through offshore banks, and you have legal redress if anything goes wrong. Even better, you have a state regulator who is on your side and easy to contact.

If unsure whether a site is licensed, look for the MGCB logo on the screen or read our reviews.

The most enjoyable aspect of sports betting comes when you are confident in your actions. Sportsbooks often feature FAQ sections, glossaries, and sports betting guides. It is worth reading some of these to know how things work and what the different bet types offer.

Responsible Gambling in Michigan

Sports betting takes some skill, but it is still gambling. The old rules are still the best: never chase your losses and never bet more than you can afford to lose. This should be healthy entertainment, but for some people, it can turn into problem gambling.

Keep an eye on your budget, and you will know if you are moving outside your comfort zone.

You will find guidance on problem gambling on every Michigan-licensed sports betting site. There is information available to help identify potential problems and links to resources for support.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) operates a 24-hour free helpline. The number is 1-800-270-7117. The line is manned by trained counselors who will give you appropriate advice on any aspect of responsible gambling—whether you are calling for yourself, a friend, or a family member.
