David Rebuck Retires as NJDGE Director, Mary Jo Flaherty Takes Over

Earlier this month, David Rebuck, the director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, announced that he’s retiring after 13 years. He was the longest-tenured director in the division’s history.

Rebuck was there to oversee the launch of NJ online casinos in 2013. The industry has led to over $1 billion in state tax revenue. He also oversaw the launch of online sports betting in mid-2018. Thus far, that’s led to another $450 million in tax revenue for the state.

Considered the “Godfather” of online gambling, Rebuck served the state for 36 years in total.

“I have always said the achievements at DGE have not been the result of any one person,” said Director Rebuck. “I have been privileged and grateful to work with an amazing team at DGE and to serve under two governors and eight attorneys general.”

With Rebuck moving on, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has appointed Deputy Director Mary Jo Flaherty to take over.

“...I am pleased to announce that Deputy Director Mary Jo Flaherty will assume the role of Interim Director. Mary Jo is a respected and talented lawyer and brings with her over 40 years of experience in regulating the gaming industry within DGE. I am grateful for her stepping up to lead the Division at this critical time.”

Flaherty, a Seton Hall Law School graduate, began her career with the Division of Gaming Enforcement in 1979.
