If you ask Americans where the Cheltenham Festival takes place, you’ll get answers ranging from Kentucky to Dublin, Ireland.

The Cheltenham Festival, one of the most heavily wagered sporting events in the United Kingdom and Ireland, takes place this year from March 12-15 at Cheltenham racecourse in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

That’s in England.

Do You Know What The Cheltenham Festival Is?

‘Give Us Your Cheltenham Roar’

In the U.S., horse racing fans are gearing up for the Triple Crown, beginning on the first Saturday in May with the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The Triple Crown races, also including the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and Belmont Stakes in New York, attract intense interest from fans and bettors.

But the Cheltenham Festival?

Based on a random survey in different parts of the U.S. — Las Vegas and Fayetteville, Arkansas — not many are familiar with it.

To learn what people in the U.S. know about the Cheltenham Festival, former junior college basketball coach Tommy Canale, host of the “Beyond the Lights” podcast, asked people at Dom DeMarco’s pizzeria in Las Vegas.

In Arkansas, “The Edge” host Larry Henry spoke to people around Fayetteville about the popular European event, asking what they knew about it and in some cases urging them to produce their version of the Cheltenham Roar.
