NFL Training Camps Getting Underway

With the NFL preseason kicking off later in July, the first training camp opens on Saturday, July 12.

On that day, Los Angeles Chargers rookies report to camp in El Segundo, California. The team trains at a facility called The Bolt, just south of Los Angeles International Airport. The Chargers' veterans report on July 16.

The Chargers open the 2025 NFL preseason schedule on July 31 against the Detroit Lions in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

On July 16, the Lions' rookies report to camp at the team’s training facility in Allen Park, Michigan, south of downtown Detroit. The complete squad reports on July 19.

The league's other teams open training camps in the coming days and weeks.

Regular Season Hopes High For Chargers, Lions

The Chargers and Lions are expected to be among the contenders for the Super Bowl on Feb. 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Although star quarterbacks see limited action during the preseason, the Lions and Chargers feature signal callers considered among the best in the league. Last season, the Lions’ Jared Goff threw for 4,629 yards, second only to league-leader Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, who threw for 4,918 yards.

The Chargers’ Justin Herbert, pictured, was 9th in passing yardage last season, throwing for 3,870 yards. Four seasons ago, he was one of only two NFL quarterbacks to throw for more than 5,000 yards. Herbert threw for 5,014 yards in 2021, finishing second in passing yardage to Tom Brady, the league leader that year with 5,316 yards as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If Goff or Herbert see any action on July 31, their playing time will be highly restricted to avoid injury, if they even suit up. All teams can be counted on during the preseason to give rookies and backups experience to settle on a final roster going into the regular season.

The Chargers' first picks in the 2025 NFL draft, including the team's No. 1 selection, Omarion Hampton, a running back from North Carolina, come in with high expectations. The same can be said for the Lions' top picks, such as the first player Detroit selected in the 2025 draft, Tyleik Williams, an Ohio State defensive tackle.

The Chargers open their regular season Sept. 5 in an AFC West matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Lions’ regular season begins Sept. 7 in Green Bay against the Packers, an NFC North rival. Sports betting is legal in most states, including Michigan, and every state bordering California
