The 3M Open is set to be held for the fifth time in 2023, though the TPC Twin Cities has been a venue for PGA golf since 2001, initially hosting the 3M Championship. The course, established in 2000, was primarily designed by Arnold Palmer with the assistance of Tom Lehman. Currently, it stretches over 7,164 yards and functions as a par 72.

TPC Twin Cities might not be the most challenging course the golfers will face this year. Over the course of four years, the 3M Open has been held, and winning scores have fluctuated between -15 and -21. Matthew Wolff holds the tournament record with his impressive -21 in 2019.

In recent updates to the course, the formerly broad fairways have been narrowed and extended. This modification emphasizes competent driving, partly explaining Tony Finau's comfortable three-stroke victory in the previous year's event. The 156-player field is headlined by defending champion Tony Finau (ranked 16th), Cameron Young (ranked 18th), and Justin Thomas (ranked 20th).

The tournament also includes eight other players ranked within the top 50. These are Sungjae Im (ranked 23rd), Sepp Straka (ranked 28th), Hideki Matsuyama (ranked 34th), Sahith Theegala (ranked 35th), Tom Hoge (ranked 38th), Emiliano Grillo (ranked 41st), Ryan Fox (ranked 42nd), and Billy Horschel (ranked 45th).

FAVORITE: TONY FINAU (+1600)

Last year, Tony Finau was on a hot streak during this period, capturing back-to-back victories at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic. He returns to Minnesota this week to defend his title. Despite consecutive missed cuts at The Open and the Travelers Championship, Finau is still comfortably positioned for the FedExCup Playoffs, sitting 10th in the current points ranking.

From his triumph in November at the Cadence Bank Houston Open to a T23 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship in May, Finau had 13 Tour starts and impressively finished within the top 31 in all of them, including two wins. However, in his six starts since, he has failed to achieve a top-31 finish and has missed three cuts. 

As many predict the Utah-born golfer to be on the cusp for the United States Ryder Cup Team, this week could prove critical for him to potentially secure his spot for the Rome event.

CONTENDER: SUNGJAE IM (+1800)

Given the absence of some of the top-tier talent in Minnesota this weekend, the field is ripe for mid-level golfers to seize a victory, with Sungjae Im being a notable contender. Im displayed a commendable performance at The Open last weekend, securing a position in the Top 20. This season, he has amassed 12 top-20 finishes, with eight of them making it into the top 10.

Im also boasts a degree of familiarity with the course, having participated in the event previously. And it wasn't just participation; he performed impressively. The 25-year-old South Korean golfer secured a second-place tie last year, finishing only three strokes behind Finau. 

That was his maiden experience on the course, and considering his promising debut, it's plausible that he could leverage that experience in this year's tournament. It might be worth taking a chance on Sungjae Im to clinch his first win of the season.

LONGSHOT: TOM HOGE (+6600)

The seasoned 34-year-old American player has achieved four top-10 finishes this season. His single PGA Tour win was last year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Hoge started off well at the Genesis Scottish Open two weeks ago, finishing in the Top 19. However, he has failed to make the cut in three of his last six tournaments, including last week's Open Championship.

Nevertheless, during the previous season, Hoge managed an impressive fourth-place finish at the 3M Open despite missing the cut in six consecutive tournaments leading up to it. His performance could have been even better if not for a final-round score of 70.
